I'm starting construction on a garage bar next week.

I've toyed with the idea for a few years, but my wife has suddenly gotten on board with it and really wants us to make a nice one. She's given up on ever getting her car back in the garage with the free weight system and the golf cart (lol suck it haters you see me rollin' i'm goin' to the pool obed).
This will be an adventure because: 1. I'm not a handyman nor am I crafty. 2. I have 0.0 patience when building things, usually because of my own stupid #### ups.
I will post pics of progress.
Here are the rough specs and changes, and suggestions are welcome. -Removing water heater and replacing with tankless -Electrician coming to assess new outlets and the breaker (our garage is not set up well electrically) -Plan to make it an L-shape. Long piece will be 8 feet long (25 inches wide) and short piece will be 4 feet. I think this will help me minimize cutting; in other words, minimizing my #### ups. -Looking at getting bar tops from local Habitat for Humanity, who makes and sells them. -Moving existing full size fridge over to where heater was. Currently also have a small fridge stocked Miller Lite (none of that Tranny Fluid!!!!1!) and her #### Trulies she never drinks but wants to have. -Three 55" TVs. Currently have two out there. I have them on swivel arms; I'd like to put them flush on the wall and right by each other, but may not have room on the wall with all the signs to do it. -Already have a lot of old beer signs, like some classic PBR ones, a light-up Stroh's lantern, and some Clemson stuff. Dart board as well to the side of the bar. -Considering getting a kegerator that could potentially hold two kegs for Miller and then something nice and crafty. -Adding some neon signage, especially Clemson stuff. And then LED lighting under the bar lip.
Looking for suggestions on... -Bar top treatment -Decor -Lighting -TV placement and presentation -Presentation around the base of the bar... shiplap? Metal? Wood? -Anything you would demand/expect if you rolled up on your GOLF CART, OBED, and wanted a few beers while watching the games.

There comes a time when a man just abandons needing creative accoutrements and methodologies for tying on a buzz. Think about it, s folding chair and a cooler of ice will accomplish all you just described.

On my outside bar I did a cedar bar top. I don’t like how the epoxy has weathered outside but indoors would be great. I like the galvanized corrugated tin for bar front paneling. It’s aged really well and you don’t worry about people kicking it if they’re at a stool. Also put a kick rail on the bottom for a footrest for those on stools.

I have to buff the thing like compounding a car about once a quarter. I’ll be through that epoxy sooner or later and will have it done with the right stuff.

You guys got really nice home bars! Much nicer than many “for profit” bars that I’ve been in! I realize that you’re going to have TV’s, but what about LIVE entertainment?😜

Bartop - go with total boat tabletop epoxy. For the bar surround, I'd say go with wood, and potentially add an LED feature like a back lit tiger paw (A 1/2 sheet 1/2" thick plywood and a $20 LED light strip can make that happen easily)
Do you want help?

but I will give you a construction tip.
Start with what you want the outer dimensions of your bar top, base, etc to be and then work backwards to figure out your framing. You will screw up a lot less if you do it this way instead of starting on the inside and figuring it out as you go.

One thing to consider, airflow. At least get some nice fans in there. I had my HVAC guy run a couple of vents/returns to my garage. So nice in the dead summer to have it 20 degrees cooler in there, also some warmth on freezing cold days.
Also think about sound. Either modern with SONOS or a vintage system works well. It's great to chill out listening to vinyl/streaming.
Good luck and keep us posted!

There's far more to think through than just the construction. Let me know if you need ideas to make a crowd go bonkers...I have A LOT of them.

2K urethane on the bar top.

It's a tough product which, when someone pukes on, won't stain or is easily marred. It hold up to those neighborhood drunks who show up on their golf carts and 'just happen,' to put their ice cold beer down without a coaster.
If you go with urethane make sure you ### the edges so the urethane won't leak through cracks and over edges. You can make the edge dams permanent or temporary but if you're going to remove them you need to season them with something which will prevent bonding of the urethane.
Yes, I've screwed up a urethane pour on a bar top.
