to be able to KILL it in recruiting DT's, so why can't we land elite Edge guys anymore? That must be NIL coming into play, that position is the "glamour" one on defense, getting the gaudy stats.
We have a lot of moves to make to get to 105 on scholarship anyway, hopefully Dabo makes DE a Portal priority.

We also don't have any senior DEs though.
If we have some leave through the portal (Denhoff and Patterson), then I would hope the coaches to go get someone from the portal.

Parker and not a whole lot else, when it comes to good edge rushers. And again, thinking as to number of spots has to change, with scholly numbers going up to 105.

Hoffler will be good in time and Lawson had some flashes this year. Also the big kid that we got in the last class Mayo has potential as does the kid we signed this year.

We sure need for J.Lawson to continue with his ascent. I wonder if he can add another 10 lbs and not lose quickness and (much) speed. A bit more power would make him a real problem at DE.
Hoeffler? Too bad that we could not have RS’s him back in 2023 when we had three quality DEs at the top of the DE depth chart. I know I know, we were too thin even then at DE to afford being able to RS Hoeffler last year. We can’t RS him in 2025, either. Like you, I hope he’s ready to make the big jump nect year.

We needed one or two DE from the portal last year and that had not changed. Pass rush not very good. Ask Sellers.

Your observation is what finally made me throw in the towel as my patience about Wes Goodwin. I hate to pile on with the ‘get rid of Assistant Coach ______ ‘ crowd, but Goodwin is the LB coach in addition to the DC. Poor gap discipline by the LBs … not just S.Brown, but also veterans B.Carter and W.Woodaz … played a role in Sellers’ scrambling success.
Two consecutive games (Citadel + S.Carolina) with LBs playing out of position. Citadel game should have been the wake up call. Since Citadel game was not a learning experience, it looks like our LBs didn’t understand gap control responsibilities. That indicates inadequate coaching.

The pass rush was not terrible on the year given we were 31st overall in team sacks across FBS. However, I would have preferred to have seen us rush Sellers as a unit with the goal of keeping him in the pocket.
With a traditional QB, you can cause havoc by having the defensive ends fire off the ball up the field and getting push from the interior. And schematically individual players can create pressure by themselves based on their pass rush move to get to the QB. However, with a mobile QB, it is better to keep the QB in the pocket using a cage concept especially when you are playing man coverage. The D-line should not let their inside shoulder get beyond the QB to avoid running lanes from forming for which the QB could escape while attempting to collectively shrink the pocket.
On both of Sellers' TD runs, our D-line pushed too far up the field letting their inside shoulders get beyond the depth of Sellers drop back opening up running lanes for him to escape the pocket.
