Not really a Beatles fan because it was a little before my time but here’s mine in no particular order: penny lane, got to get you into my life, strawberry fields, Eleanor Rigby and the long and winding road.

Yea same. I was born in 99. So the Beatles were way before my time too. I ironically first heard their songs on Glee. It’s amazing that The Beatles songs from the 60s/70s still hold up today.

I have a painful memory of the song "Yesterday".
I was 7 years old. My father was a minister in Marietta (SC). Someone killed a Greenville County Deputy Sheriff. I rode with my father to his house and sat in the car as all of the community and other law enforcement gathered to support his family. I had a tiny red transistor radio (AM) and heard the song "Yesterday" for the first time in my life.
My father came out later to bring me a glass of water. You see...kids didn't go inside back in those days. Grieving was honored as a quiet, solemn experience. He sat on the edge of the car seat with his legs on the ground and told me the deputy had been tied behind a car and dragged down the road for miles. Prople didn't do things like that in those days. It was also the first time I heard about "drugs".
Anytime I hear the song "Yesterday" it takes me back to that small-town horror. Some innocense was lost that day.
From the Greenville Sheriff's "Fallen Heroes" site:
Deputy Sheriff John Martin, 45, was shot and killed on Sept. 12, 1965. Deputy Martin was ambushed at a sand pit near Marietta S.C. just inside Greenville County. The killer had his wife lure the deputy to the sand pit on the pretext of a rock throwing incident. The killer was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The killer’s wife and girlfriend got 7 and 9 years for “accessories after the fact”.

That is such a tragic story. I can’t believe that the wife and girlfriend only got 7 and 9 year sentences. How can you let these people out of jail when they have proven that they are capable of luring someone in for murder. I would never be able to trust someone like that even after they served their time in jail.
Yesterday is a beautiful song on its own but when you heard it on the radio in that specific situation it turned it into a bittersweet tragically beautiful song. It’s ironic that that was on the radio that day. If you think about it, Yesterday can be a good song for a funeral, to reminisce and celebrate the person who has left us too early.

The wife was the daughter of our church choir director. She didn't drive so my parents would take her to Columbia once a month to visit her daughter in the Women's prison. Again, I had to stay out in the hot/cold car while everyone went into the prison. I don't think she served but 2 years before making parole.
As I grew older I found it ironic that my father did the funeral for the deputy and tried to comfort his family...then turned around and showed compassion for one of the murderers.

Wow, what a memory Mole. I was 13 then but have no memory of that tragic event because of course the had no internet and only 30 minutes of local news every day. Life was much simpler back then but as your post shares, it was sadly not all Mayberry.

There's one for you, nineteen for me 'Cause I'm the taxman Yeah, I'm the taxman Should five per cent appear too small? Be thankful I don't take it all 'Cause I'm the taxman Yeah, I'm the taxman (If you drive a car, car) I'll tax the street (If you try to sit, sit) I'll tax your seat (If you get too cold, cold) I'll tax the heat (If you take a walk, walk) I'll tax your feet

Let’s over complicate it just for fun.
My favorite Beatles covers.
Lady Madonna by Swamp Dogg Rocky Raccoon by Charlie Parr With a Little Help from My Friends by Joe Cocker Hey Jude by Wilson Pickett Happiness is a Warm Gun by The Breeders
Honorable mention for I Want to Hold Your Hand by the Melvins, so delightfully weird, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by William Shatner sends me every time I hear it.
As always, YMMV
Never forget, YMMV

Speaking of Beatle covers… I actually love the Glee covers of them. Glee can be a cringey show but most music covers they do are really good.
