A thought about Michigan's defense.

I posted something on the thread about the allegations against Michigan. I thought it might deserve a stand-alone thread.
The allegations are that Michigan scouted teams and used illegal methods in their scouting. The charge is they know the opponents signs so they know the play the offense is going to run before it is run.
If true, this may explain the amazing defensive stats Michigan has.
Here are the top 4 scoring defenses in the NCAA:
Michigan - 5.88 Penn State - 9.71 Ohio State - 10.00 Air Force - 13.43
Ignore the fact that the top 3 defenses are in the B1G. (That deserves a separate thread.) Michigan is giving up less than half the points of all but 2 teams in the NCAA.
The difference in points allowed from 1 to 4 is 7.55. The difference in points allowed from 4 to 40 is 7.14
That is not proof, but it is strong evidence that the allegations might be true.

evidence of what CAUSED that anomaly. They could just be really good at defense.
And, Jim Harbaugh never wore khaki pants in his life.
Both of the above statements are probably equally true.

They’re good until they face an opponent they didn’t know they would have to

If there was no other evidence, then the stats mean nothing.
On the other hand, if the Michigan defense was average, they would be pointing to them saying, "Look at our stats. Obviously, we aren't getting any advantage. If we were the stats would show it."
"Evidence" was a poor choice of words on my part. I probably should have said, "Here is some corroborating data that is consistent with the allegations."

Also, they've played a bunch of snowflakes so far. The last three games will really show what kind of defense they have...@ Penn State, @ Maryland, and Ohio State.

Yep, and they could be in a sticky situation.

If Ohio State scores 40 on them and MD and PSU score 25 each (not gonna happen, just hyperbole) folks will say, "See, when you didn't know what play was coming, you couldn't stop anybody."

tOSU's offense isn't great this season though. Against the only two good defenses they played scored 14 on ND and 20 on Penn State at home. The B1G looks devoid of really good offenses this season. Maybe Michigan has one, but they don't play themselves.

Why would any team Michigan plays from here out not change their signs? I would be considering changing them each week.

Last year Michigan sat near the top in the same category until playing TCU and gave up over 50. Maybe it’s all those offensive machines they play in the B10?
