"A lack of fan apathy."

That was one of Neff's reasons for keeping Brownell on that he shared in Monday's statement. So instead of showing the admin and future coaching candidates the kind of turnout they can expect with winning basketball for a change, it's being used against us to simply invite more of what got our attendance so low to begin with.
We had a record hot start save for the two Q4 losses that anchored our NET rating all year (deservedly so apparently), had a great home record most of the season, and were in the running for the regular season league title up to the last week. Clemson nation turned out when needed, supported the team, and gave it their all to help push them over the top. Not only was it all for naught in the end, this year's uptick in the stands helped Neff recommit to the status quo going forward.
It's a Catch-22 in a way, but it's still unsettling to see that support used against us. Last year, Neff did not commit in his letter to NCAA or bust. He did, however, state clearly that it's a bottom line decision, and we certainly did our part to boost the bottom line with additional ticket sales and concessions. Winning basketball is clearly not a leading objective - bringing in just enough revenue though to check a box apparently is.
Go Tigers!

Wouldn't a "lack" of apathy be a good thing?

Explained very well. They’re forcing us to protest - either by not showing up or displays of unrest at the games. He has demonstrated clearly that he won’t make a move based on performance alone. So forcing a self fulfilling prophecy that we have “bad” fans. It has always been the irony of Judge Keller et al’s argument that we have a bad fanbase. Brownell may have been shown more grace, patience, and invested in more and longer than any coach in P5 history for so little return.

Not fair.
I'm a fan and I have plenty of apathy.
Did you miswrite or did he misspeak or did he really mean
"As long as the fans are willing to put up with this I'm not making a change."
Because if that's what he really meant, then we know what we have to do...
and I think Neff needs to go as well.
Because feeding people #### because they don't complain enough to justify stopping isn't really what I'm looking for in leadership.

Sorry. It wasn't a direct quote. Here's where I picked it up

From Clemson Insider earlier in the week.
Another factor in Neff’s decision was that he didn’t sense apathy among the majority of the fan base, which was reflected in attendance at Littlejohn Coliseum. Neff said average attendance was higher than it was last season, which didn’t hurt the bottom line.
“From a financial standpoint, we exceeded our plans for season ticket sales and single-game sales,” Neff said. “From a business lens, which is certainly part of my job, those are metrics that are important to the decision of any program. I just think this past year and where we’re at from a program standpoint, those things continue to track in a good direction.”

No matter how bad the basketball “coaching” is.
