Let's cut to the chase here. In frenetic, game-ending moments, battles and scrums happen, sort of like the Hail Mary's of a football game. "On the back" and other interior collisions aren't called. It's a free-for-all. That's how it works, that's the fun of it. The refs go away and let them play. Clearly, Meeks plowed through a smaller guy, "through his back", to get the ball. If this happens more in isolation, with not as many bodies around, in normal minutes during the game, it gets called.
"Reactions" to contact are another deal altogether. Exhibit A: "Duke Flopping". Sin Thornwell, a very smart player, showed this in a perfect example, in the Gonz. game. He took the first hit with resistance, baiting for the guy to bump him again. This time, Thorny "flopped" and drew the charge. Basketball is Shakespearean theater.

Is there any doubt that college basketball today is much more physical than it ever has been? It used to be a game of solid fundamental play . Over the years the players are stronger and more athletic but not better fundamentally.

U are absolutely correct!! Gonzaga adjusted to the THUGS @ c$$T u and Duke did not!! in a correctly called game Duke beats them by 10-15!the finals should be Duke Vs UNC

The ACC was a finesse league this past season. That lack of physical play hurt them in the NCAA tournament.

I do not claim to be the expert when it comes to officiating. But IMO the heroes from Cooterville were allowed to maul GZ all night long. I saw that the rules for travelling were changed to accommodate the five step drives down the lane for Cooterville. But guess what they still LOST!!

This tournament has been enlightening on how far Clemson basketball needs to go to make the NCAAs no matter who the coach is. The winning teams play hard physical defense with a strong inside presence. That's not us. We will have the guard play next year but our inside game is lacking. Thomas and Legend need to bulk up and get more physical on the court. Same for the forwards. Let's hope the incoming freshmen live in the gym this summer. Above all all those players need an attitude change on defense. I love a fast break attack but teams making runs in the tournament play hard nosed defense. Rick Barnes style now would do well here again.
