Kiawah question
Jun 17, 2021, 12:33 PM

We expect to be in the area a t Wild Dunes. We were thinking of driving over there to see the place and have maybe have lunch or dinner. Not playing golf there. What would you suggest if we do this ? We want something fairly normal not a break the bank outing. Thanks. Also open to Charleston resturaunt reccomendations for the other days of stay. (Not Hymans)

Not worth it in my opinion. It’s probably an hour and a half drive one way. I would avoid downtown Charleston too. My recommendation is hang around Shem creek for on the water drinks and dining. Explore Sullivan’s for a more local not so touristy environment.
If you do drive to Kiawah I would recommend Reds at bohicket marina.

Yes sadly Sullivan's was my favorite place to eat and drink. I understand they closed. I know there are others on the island but I really liked them. Open to other suggestions there. We are aoso big on the Boathouse and Hanks from prior trips

Like you, I was very disappointed that Sullivan's closed. My understanding is that they may reopen in Mount Pleasant.

I’m not sure about Kiawah, there’s not a whole lot on the route once you get past N chuck and west Ashley. Prices are so high at the resort we’ve stopped before or after.
If you’re looking for seafood Bowen Island restaurant is a must, they’ve been serving the best fresh seafood for 75 years. Charleston has some of the best BBQ in the world now too with Lewis BBQ that serves legit TX brisket and Rodney Scott’s who has the whole hog style BBQ. Of course there are a ton of upscale places like the obstinate daughter or Husk, but you said you weren’t looking to break the bank.

Have lunch at the Tomato Shed on Main Road

It is not to be missed, and is right on the way. I agree that it is a big investment of time to travel from Wild Dunes to Kiawah, but if you have never seen it, now is your chance. I assume that you are not always an hour and a half away. Have fun!

Kiawah is private so you cant get on the island without a reservation and the restaurants on the island itself are way overpriced.
Things to do/see
Charleston tea plantation and the shrimp dock on Wadmalaw Island Angel Oak
Eats Angel Oak Restaurant on 17 Tomato Shed is excellent Wild Olive for dinner is excellent

Not exactly true. Kiawah is open to the public and you can go to beach walker park which is public access. The gate and public access are limited though I’m not sure what times. Check it out here.

gate. If you plan to walk to the restaurants on the resort from there, you better pack a good pair of walking shoes. Or a bike.
Nothing at beach walker except public restrooms/showers, parking and a beach. They used to have a snack bar, but I'm not sure if it is still open.

Parking at Beachwalker park fills up fast in the summer. Restaurants at the Sanctuary Hotel are ~ a four mile walk and the Ocean Course clubhouse has a nice restaurant but is a ~ 8-10 mile walk

WORST meal I've ever had was at The Sanctuary... If not for

being with my mother and not wanting to embarrass her, I would have SERIOUSLY "gone off" on the axxhat that tried to insinuate I was intoxicated when I returned the meal... The cook tried to poison me with some green pork. I would have dared anybody to eat it.
Nobody needs to tell me about The Santuary. I watched it being built from our house about 600 yards away.
The pretense at that place is palpable... and everything is overpriced.

That beats the time I was served frozen fish at Arizona Steak House. Like, I could bang it on the table and it made an audible, “clank.”
If you are thinking I shouldn’t have been there in the first place you are 100% correct.

It certainly isn't a cheap meal, but really good. If you're going to drive all the way to Kiawah, you won't be disappointed by your meal there.
It's located in the Sanctuary (the hotel on Kiawah).
As you know, there are lots of great restaurants in Charleston! For seafood, Fleet Landing is located on the water with great views and much less expensive food than many of the other Charleston places.
If you want something different but really good in Charleston, check out Gaulart & Maliclet (otherwise known as "Fast and French"). It's a really quaint French restaurant that I'm sure you will love.

If you are going to take the time to drive to Kiawah, eating on the porch at the Ocean Course should be on your bucket list. The view is spectacular overlooking the 18th green and the ocean will make you forget about the food even if you're not satisfied (but you will be) !

I live in Charleston (Hollywood)...that's a lot of driving..

don't plan to eat on Kiawah. Maybank Hwy on Johns Island several good choices low $ Tattooed Moose (a bunch of local brews and good burgers, the duck club and killer duck fat fries). One of the best Italian restaurants in the area Wild Olive (you need a reservation or it's not happening) or seafood Royal Tern (again, no reservation, not happening).
Your other choice is to stop half way between Wild Dunes and Kiawah in Old North Charleston on East Montague Ave multiple choices... Madra Rua (Irish pub and good food) Azul (very good Mexican), Lola (Low Country Louisiana) creole EVO (pizza) Sesame Burgers Cod Fathers A couple of local breweries Fire Fly Vodka Distillery and several others.
Again, that's a lot of driving and Johns Island on the weekend can be a tough commute.

Ignore other comments about avoiding DT Charleston. This is THE place to go for good food. Melfis, rue de Jean, FIG, Chez Nous, ordinary, Halls, basic kitchen, SNOB. The list is endless and no traffic like in MP or toward Johns Island. Now, you do need to book ahead unless you’re willing to walk in at opening time.

Without Golf : Kiawah is too far

I just left Georgetown this morning .. I looked around the historic downtown…
I would almost recommend that as a hidden gem / alternate long drive without traffic and as much or more to offer than Mt. Pleasant …
And take the long route up/down Highway 41…. Same drive time as Kiawah with lots of charming low country you’d likely never see ..
