2020-21 team

Feb 18, 2020, 6:43 AM

If Simms returns for senior year - and I sure hope he does - we should have an NCAA tournament team.

For sure. Mack will be our only loss. Then we add those 2 freshman, as well as Honor, and maybe Baehre. We should be in the tournament if we stay healthy.

If, as even Brad is now noting

we can find consistent scorers. We have guys who look to be capable, but they must develop in to those guys. We need guys we can night in, night out count on to score. That's been Brad's biggest challenge his entire tenure here.

His two best teams had those guys. 2010-11 had Stitt and Grant with complimentary guys like Young. 2017-18 had Devoe, Reed, Grantham until the injury with complimentary guys like Thomas.

Finding that is the key to everything

That 17-18 team was LOADED.

Our recruiting class next year is *basically* Nick Honor, along with PJ Hall & Olivier Prosper.

When one of those guys is a Top 50 recruit, one is a Top 75 recruit, and the other is a proven college player who averaged over 15ppg and shot 33% from 3-point range...that's stellar.

Simms will be the All-ACC candidate, John Newman will be right on his heels, and we'll have a bevy of guards that we can rotate in and out that can really play (Trapp, Dawes, Hemenway, Honor, Hunter).

2017-18 was a Final Four-caliber team if Grantham doesn't go down against Notre Dame. I don't think anybody can question that.

The addition of Nick Honor to next year's team will be the easiest for people to dismiss. If you want to get an idea of the type of impact he'll have, go watch the games from the World University Games this past summer. He was our starting point guard and was a general. Having him, Trapp, Dawes, Newman, Hemenway and Hunter all together in the same backcourt will easily provide Brownell his deepest set of guards ever.

Next season's potential biggest question will be what assistance, if any, gets provided to Aamir Simms on the inside. This likely comes in the form of either Jonathan Baerhe finally being healthy or Trey Jemison developing in a way he hasn't yet at Clemson (under the assumption both will still be with the team next year). With Hall being more of a stretch forward, I don't think he is the answer to the, "What beefs us up on the inside?" question, albeit Hall and Prosper will both be excellent depth additions at forward.

We also lose Curran Scott, but his minutes are being taken by more talented players.

on the other hand someone could transfer out. I dont think they will but it is the way of college hoops these days. YOu can never tell. I remember being shocked when Javan White left. I thought he was in great shape for pt after Thomas graduated.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!
