Top 5 Coaches in the country entering 2013
Aug 29, 2013, 9:01 AM
|
|
Today starts the 2013 college football season! Entering today who do y'all have as your top 5 coaches in the country.
Lets keep this civil guys.
1. Nick Saban 2. Steve Spurrier 3. Gary patterson 4. Chris Peterson 5. David Shaw
I know shaw has only been a head coach for 2 years but i really like the direction Stanford is heading. "the Alabama of the west.... but smarter"

Ohio state =ND last year. Won 4-5 close games with luck. That was a 12-0 team that was more like an 8-4 football team.

Huh? Doesn't that help the Urban Meyer argument?

They squeaked out some close games, which typically has to do with better coaching. You don't go undefeated without some luck.

I'm not saying he can't coach college football
Aug 29, 2013, 9:20 AM
|

He has obviously accomplished a lot. Won at dook, won at Florida, won at USuCk. But can you honestly say that right now, he's a better coach than Saban and Meyer? Both of those guys are coming off of undefeated seasons, one of them back-to-back NC's. Meyer did it in his first year at OSU implementing a new system with guys who didn't really fit his system, while on probation.
Spurrier has completely changed USuCk's program, but right now, it's a losing argument to say he's better than those two.

Do you really think Saban or Meyer could have done what he's done at USuCk? If you really believe that I'll respectfully disagree and refrain from being my typical overbearing self.

mentioning your pulse.
he's a #### fine coach. his best coaching decision for my money was dumping the fun n gun realizing it wasn't going to beat the top teams in the sec.
that's a big step for a 60+ year old coach who's been highly successful in his college days with it.

Anybody who wins 11 games (in one year) at the Columbia Trash Dump deserves to be mentioned with the best...but I would have a hard time ranking him above the Sabanator.

Who's Saben? Is he any good?
Aug 29, 2013, 9:07 AM

1. Saban 2. (ughh) Meyer 3. Patterson 4. Peterson 5. OU Stoops
It's not 1997 and SOS shouldn't be in the top 5.

Give Stoops and SOS the same team and SOS wins more games. Just my $.02.
SC winning 11 games in two straight seasons when the SEC has never been stronger is a big accomplishment in my book.

georgia.
anyone else in the sec? lost to auburn 2 years ago at home to lose the east. he hasn't been back since the drubbing 56-17.
he's done a nice job in his TEN years, but top 5 in the country? that's generous.

56-17, florida sucked those 2 years & lit scar up last year, tennessee sucked all 3, nice win against alabama see also 56-17.
michigan, clemson, nebraska none of which are in the sec. you have trouble following the thread or you want to play all time records?
i mentioned georgia for you. you lost 2 of 3 eastern halfs because you couldn't finish. nice auburn loss at home.
stellar.

undoubtedly unbelievable but to say the SEC has never been stronger is a joke. UT and UF have been down the last 5 years (I know UF won 11 games last year but they struggled against a lot of bad teams). The SEC East has been nowhere as good as it was 5 years ago and the Coots have benefitted from that vacuum.

If the SEC is not the strongest it's ever been, could you tell me what year did more than 5 SEC teams finish in the top 9 in the final AP poll. What year did they do better than win their 7th straight NC? And what year did more than 7 SEC teams finish in the top 25? The preseason polls seem to indicate no drop off this year.

just ignore it. You could argue that Paul Johnson is the best coach in the ACC if you only look at gameday coaching, but look at what's happened to that program as it has transitioned from Gailey recruits to PJ recruits.
Stoops has a national title and a boat load of Big XII championships. Sure he's gotten handled a few times in title games and other big bowls, but he's consistently put a great product on the field, and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

Any list without Meyer is a joke. IMO he's clearly #2.
Aug 29, 2013, 9:12 AM

1) Saban 2) Meyer *big gap* 3-5) Some combination of Patterson, Stoops, and Spurrier.
I love Shaw, but I'm not quite ready to put him up there yet.

1) Nick Saban 2) Kevin Sumlin 3) David Shaw 4) Urban Meyer 5) Dabo Swinney
That's my list. It took spurlid 9 freaking years to get his team relevant. None of the above took more than 3 seasons.

if you can't step back and recognize that he's a great coach, you are just letting the rivalry hatred completely blind you. The man won at Duke, he dominated the SEC and won a national championship at UF, and he has taken one of the worst programs in the country and turned them into a 10-11 win team. Obviously it took him awhile to get things turned around there, but i have no idea where 9 years came from. They made the SEC title game in his 6th season and won 11 games in his 7th and 8th seasons.

They were BLOWN OUT in their one, brief appearance in the title game. Nope, that doesn't quality as great.
The other coaches on my list have produced championship-calibre teams. Heck, I'd put Bob Stoops and Peterson in there as well if I could have seven ahead of Spurlid.
Spurrier, in his 9 years, hasn't. That's objective. That is the proof of the pudding. He hasn't won squat.

he's fallen flat in some big games, but his teams consitently win conference titles and go to BCS games. Has finished in the top ten 10 times and has won 80% of his games. They havent been the most feard team in the past 2 years, but his career resume is right up there with the good ones.

I think the fact Spurrier changed his ways to win at USC shows he is deeper than most give him credit for.
Not many 60+ coaches with tons of success would change their philosophy so freely in order to succeed. Shows humility accepting that what he did in the past may not work in the present.
Keep in mind the last time he went head to head with Saban he won
those saying he hasn't won squat are clueless. Does that mean Clemson hadn't won squat since 91 until 2011

start the season you'd have to have conference championship as one & most importantly because it would be the 'natural' stepping stone to the next level.
spurrier hasn't done that at usuck & clemson went 20 years without one. that sux. sure, it could be worse, teams could have been duke & won legal battles over just how bad they are/were.
if conference titles weren't so important, usuck wouldn't have an 80 x 100 glossy photo of their 1 & lonely hanging in willy b.
it's hilarious.

2 National Championships and a 7-1 Bowl Record

In 11 years of head coaching. How is Urban Meyer not on this list? Alabama is the only school in the country who would keep their HC over Meyer.
N.Saban U.Meyer S.Spurrier C.Strong G.Patterson
I would but Dabo close on mine, I think he is on a huge up swing, just like Strong but I want to see this year before I move him above anyone.

What has Spurrier won
Let's see 11 games back to back - never happened at either state school and both have been playing for a long time
Beat #1 Bama Neither school had ever beaten a #1 team
beat Clemson 4 times in a row not in a long time
I would say he has done plenty and most of the nation would agree

Zero championships. Your only championship banner from 1969 still flies.....pathetic.
Sorry, y'all are chumps. Win something, then come back and talk when you've been there. Till then, keep pecking dirt.

Maybe their 1969 banner has taken a vow of celibacy?

A coach that can elevate the ##### to a 5th place finish in the SEC in that God-forsaken heck-hole that is Columbia, SC - has GOT to be the best coach ever.
