Howard's Rock

dundarflail Regarding Howard's Rock: A friend of mine knew a guy who was on the 1966 Clemson football team. They were dorm friends. He told about what had happened the previous season. One of the players was told by Coach Howard to get a hair cut, or not show up for the game. The player did not show up for the game or daily practice for several weeks. It was not a big deal on campus because the player was not a first team starter, but it was a major disruption to the team unity. Signs were put up in the field house locker room about the player’s loyalty and character. He said that it affected the team spirit all that season. He told me that Coach Howard wrote the player a letter telling him to get back involved with football or lose his scholarship for next semester. The guy got the hard haircut and had to finish the season and the 1966 spring practice. My friend said that Coach Howard called the player whale sh*t. Whale sh*t doesn’t float so sinks to the bottom of the ocean and is the lowest thing on earth. The player had not showed up for the current season, but was still mentioned in locker room talk. He said that he had seen the guy on campus several times that semester, shaggy hair and all.. He talked about Howard's Rock was the start of a new football tradition. He said the coaches wanted to do something to reinforce the team unity and spirit that had been broken. It occurred to me after I heard the story about the Howard's Rock being defaced that the origin of that stone and tradition was about this one player defying Coach Howard’s hair cut order. How funny it would be, if this decades long tradition was about a guy not wanting to get a haircut. PS Coach Howard was too fat to roll over in his grave less

Do you think all three of them tried to fit in there? CT1988 isn't the most svelte of characters.
