My freshman year we took a road trip to get Coors beer. It was 1981 and Coors was not nationally distributed then. We had to go west of the Mississippi to buy Coors. We left Clemson on Saturday morning and drove to Atlanta-Birmingham-Memphis, crossed the river to a convenience store in Arkansas off of I-40. We bought eight cases of Coors. We only stopped for gas and bathroom breaks. We ate Nekots and Toast N Chee (one of the guys dads was a big wig at Lance in Charlotte). We didn't want to waste money on food. This was a beer trip. We got back to Clemson at around 2 AM. Everyone though we were so cool. We had Coors beer.

Had a friend in Ware Shoals who had a truck driver buddy who drove long hauls. Got him to pick up Coors out west - drove back to SC with it in the back of a hot 18 wheeler. Must have boiled it because it was the worst ever .

My fiancé (now wife of 25 years) and I got a wild hair and drove to the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia on a Saturday. On the return trip, we decided to stop in Brunswick, GA. They just happened to be having their seafood festival that weekend.
To this day, we still talk about that great weekend of shrimp and gator kabobs!

Not a road trip story, but a Coors story.
My Dad had a friend he worked with that took a new job out west.His friend had been out there for a few months and he called my dad and said he would be coming back to SC in a few weeks and would my dad do him a favor. He wanted my dad to ship him some Dukes mayonnaise and when he would come back to SC and bring Coors beer with him.
My Dad got to show off his Coors beer to the men in the neighborhood and his friend got to enjoy a mater sandwich for the first time in months. My Dad tried to corner the West coast Dukes mayonnaise market!

Being in the civil engineering department, we annually competed in the ASCE-sponsored Concrete Canoe Races. The regional location the year we went was in Raleigh, NC and was hosted by NCSU. There were other events besides the concrete canoe race, but that was the main event.
Several of us strapped down our canoe on top of a university van, loaded up another van, and had a few cars head up to Raleigh for the weekend. The day of the race was Saturday. The Friday night before was a blur. But, the one thing I remember was that the song, She Drives Me Crazy by the Fine Young Cannibals was extremely popular. We heard it a lot at the bars. Anyway, back to the races, they have different heats - two men, two women, mixed, grad/undergrad, three, etc. When the graduate/graduate race occurred, our canoe split towards the front of the canoe. We quickly repaired it with duct tape and styrofoam (not a joke). Unfortunately, the canoe did not make it home. ☹️ Interestingly enough, the concrete canoe for a team from Bluefield State University (WV) did not even make it to the event. Their canoe blew off of their van! Can you imagine driving behind them and a concrete canoe coming flying at you? 🫨
But, any time I hear Fine Young Cannibals, I am immediately transported back to that weekend.

Reminded me of being newly married and going on a shopping trip to Charlotte in 1987. We got talking about food we could not buy in SC. This lead to a hankering for Jordans Red Snapper hotdogs that can only be bought in Maine where we both grew up. Always thought it was cool that we met in SC, but grew up about 50 miles apart in Maine. Anyway, on a wild hair we just bypassed Charlotte and drove 19 hours straight to drop in on our parents in Maine and buy some hotdogs to bring back for tailgating that weekend. This was on a Thursday and I had to be back for class on Monday, let alone the game on Saturday. It was 1250 miles each way. I think I might just die if I did that now. But grilled Jordan's hot dogs are the best you'll ever eat.
Crazy to think now that it was six tanks of gasoline in a 1976 Chrylser Newport with a 444cu inch engine and just under 19 feet long. The valve covers leaked when it got hot so every other fill up I had to add a quart of oil. At one point I remember her asking how fast we were going and I said I had no idea because the speedometer was one of those "Jimmy Carter" era speedometers. They tried to assume that no one would go over 55 so it only registered speeds up to 80 mph. The needle had been buried for hours. For such a large car it would fly once you got the weight moving. Total cost for the round trip plus hotdogs was just over $115.

I spent several weeks in the summer of 92 taking classes. (Long story, won't go into detail.)
One weekend my wife planned a trip for us. We went to Hickory Knob State Park. Beautiful park. Played golf. Just relaxed. Pleasant drive down and back.
That is my road trip story while a "student" at Clemson.

This my #1 road trip to Tiger football game. It was Spt 1974 ( graduated in May that year and had a full time job. My GF was teaching school. We decided to go to the CU game at Texas A&M and 4 couples were going in a borrowed Winnebago RV. This was a gas guzzling machine. To finance the trip, we had up front $$ from several Greek houses to bring back COORS beer.
US was still recovering from the gas/fuel rationing of a few years B-4 and we were not sure we could find gas going west. The 4 guys were drivers with a 4 hour stint or until fuel stop was needed. Next driver in the que could not drink booze for 6 hrs b-4 his stint. We took turns sleeping and fixing meals. We finally arrive in College Staion tired and hung over.
Our 8 tix were in Clemson section (as usual) and we get seated. Right b-4 KO this huge guy comes in ansd sits in front of me. He had seats 22-23. (B.C. Inabient with his 2 pilots). TAM placed one of their Military ROTC cadets right in front of B.C. They stand up whole game. B.C. asked several times to either move or sit down. Dude told BC he was standing. I wispered in BCs ear, I set his asss down.
I looked back and saw a deputy looking at this situation. I montioned him to come on down. Then, turned and grabbed this guy on the shoulders and slammed his asss down on his seat. Well, I missed the 1st qtr to giving my statemnt to LEO. All was fine and the student was removed from Clemson section. CU gets beat and we head to nearest COORS sale store to load up, which we did.
Had to make a few stops to fill up the RV. We had beer stacked to bathtub, under RV storeage bins, everywhere we finally got back to Clemson and ended up making about $45.00 after expenses. Thats a helllve long way for beer in a RV with 5 mpg....

A road trip to Wake Forest in the eighties. We thrashed them pretty good, it was homecoming for the Deacs. At halftime the tiger stole the show. He marched with the Wake band with his tail in his hand like a drum major. Then when they crowned their Queen he grabbed her and ran off the field with her. The crowd went wild. It was a fun day!

4 of us left campus after classes on Friday, drove to Sebring Fla for the 24hr race. Drove back all night Sunday to quizes on Monday.
Oh, to be young again.

A couple of trips to Savannah for their St. Patrick’s Day parade come to mind. But the best was probably the Dairy Products judging team trip to New Orleans in either the fall of 1982 or spring of 1983. Probably don’t want to tell most of the story… but trust me it was fun.

Well, there was a trip to Fla. in late Jan. 1971 with 3 buddies to see Apollo 14 launch to the moon. Spent the day before drinking free beer at Busch Gardens, Tampa. I think parking was $1.00 with free admission and free beer.
But the most memorable was not a real road trip. A short hop to Spartanburg with 3 guys from same HS to see our girls BB team play for upstate. We spotted a 25 cent draft beer sign at a local bar but 2 dudes wanted to watch the boys game. So the 4th and I hitched a ride to sample the beer. Well, the other two failed to pick us up after the game and left us stranded. Luckily, a couple of Wofford guys took us to I-85 where we hitched back to the Clemson exit where there was absolutely nothing but a service station. Around 2AM My bud walked behind the station and came back to where I was hitching (no traffic at 2AM) in a black&white 57 Chevy that he had hotwired. He just said "hop in". I said "are you crazy!" He said " you want to walk?". So we rode that "borrowed car" to the architecture building lot, which at the time was in the boonies.
This guy dropped (or flunked) out after a year and worked as a lighting roadie with Natalie Cole for a few years, traveled the world twice. Ten or so years later he went back to CU and graduated in EE which absolutely amazed me. Worked for GM in Detroit until pancreatic cancer took him about 10 years ago. Great memories of those younger days. RIP BW.

A bunch of us Pershing Riflemen from Clemson went to New Orleans... for Mardi Gras... to march in the parade... in uniform... just a short time after 9/11. Let me tell you, we were popular.
Yea. Even during my time on active duty, that trip was the most wild thing I've ever been a part of.
