The Bud Saunders era continues – but why?

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“In its third season under head coach Bud Saunders, Clemson compiled a 1–7 record (0–4 against conference opponents), tied for last place in the conference, was shut out in five of its eight games, and was outscored by a total of 160 to 18. The team played its home games at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina (then known as Calhoun, South Carolina).”

Looking at those results begs the question:
- How bad was the Citadel in 1925?

Each of the final five games ended in a shutout – but only one of those shutouts went the right way.

With the loss to the Gamechickens, Clemson’s lead in the series drops to a mere 15-7-1. By winning two in a row, Chickens fans probably dreamed they would catch up in this series one day!

Clemson fans at this time had to have been longing for the “Good Ole Days” when John Heisman was the head coach. Hang on a little longer, Tiger fans – Mercer Head Coach Josh Cody will be coming to Tiger Town soon to get things back on track! In the meantime, Tigernet must have been in full meltdown mode!

Also in 1925: Sykes Hall caught fire!

Final Conclusion on 1925:

After losing the final 5 games of 1924, the 6 losses to open the 1925 season meant that Clemson’s losing streak had reached 11 in a row! About the only thing worse than losing 11 straight games over 2 seasons would be losing ALL 11 games in one season as part of a 21 game losing streak over two seasons. But it would be difficult to imagine any program ever being THAT terrible.
