CBS Sports Rpt sources close to Clemson says we're committed

Jul 27, 2021, 5:30 PM

ABSOLUTELY to the ACC.

So people get real.

1. Clemson is not leaving the ACC
2. No SEC or Big10 is leaving their respective conf and give up all that money those conf generate
3. ND ain't joining the ACC in Football any time soon(probably never)
4. ACC has 3 option
a. Do nothing
b. Expand to 15 teams now and wait forever for ND (and when I say forever, I mean forever)
c. Expand to 16 teams now and only legitimate teams to add at this time are WV, Cincinnati, UCF

I vote for C add WV & Cincinnati. ACC would still be below SEC and B10 in both prestige in football and money, but it think equal to PAC and still above America. SO being 3 or 4 ain't bad (Meatloaf should of use that in a song).

But most important Clemson will still be in position to win Football Nattys with an "S".

I'd take OK State before Cincy and it probably wouldn't...

Jul 27, 2021, 5:40 PM

be horrible to have one Texas team (Texas Tech, Baylor or TCU?) to give us an "in" to rich Texas HS recruiting.

I would be all in with all 3 Texas teams and Oklahoma State.

Agree wholeheartedly. Any other scenario, Clemson would lose probability of making it to the playoffs.

Great question. See my reply elsewhere in this thread about Clemson. Same applies for FSU. Clemson is in a better position, probably, than FSU is. We still don't know how Norvell will work out. If he turns out to be Willie Taggart II, then in 5 years we may be hoping that the American would take us. (Just hyperbole, I don't think that will happen, just saying our future for the next five years is not near as certain as Clemson.)

It is an absolute joke that we agreed to a 20 yr grant of rights to get a deal that delivers the 4th best payout in the Power 5. We had zero leverage and ESPN knew it and drove the terms of the deal to reflect as much just so we could get a TV network. I wish that we had insightful pioneering leadership at the conference level, but that was a lot to ask with Swofford. Good riddance to that clown. The league finally gets the memo that basketball is meaningless in relation to moving the needle with TV revenue. A dollar short and a day late should be the ACC's tag line.

Jul 27, 2021, 7:07 PM

Our payout would improve if we fielded better football more consistently. Crazy that Miami and Va Tech flew so low when joining, now FSU following suit at a critical juncture. Those are the breaks. I hope we hang tight, stay prudent, don't panic, but do get proactive about fundamental tweaks to the scheduling model and allowing some stories on the field to develop more than we allow with our current configuration.

Re: CBS Sports Rpt sources close to Clemson says we're committed

Jul 27, 2021, 6:16 PM

Of course they are.

But, if four years is a long time in politics, it is an ever longer time for conference realignment. Who knows what the ACC is going to look like - in terms of football strength? Who knows how NIL and lack of NCAA regulation is gonna cahnge things? Who knows what any conference, not just the ACC, will do in terms of expansion.

The Clemson administration would be derelict in their duties if they weren't exploring several options and making contingency plans for a myriad of possible scenarios.

This afternoon on his radio show, Dan Patrick reported that a reliable source told him that ND officials were scheduled to meet tomorrow to discuss joining the ACC. Stat tuned as this ain’t over.

Jul 27, 2021, 7:30 PM

Is if they submitted a plan for remaking their football program into something that could beat Ohio State for a recruit once every four or five times. I don’t know what that looks like...a new stadium...financial commitment for facilities, marketing, coaches. Whatever. But that’s really the only way I could see them being interesting.

Re: CBS Sports Rpt sources close to Clemson says we're committed

Jul 27, 2021, 7:39 PM

This is sad news. ACC is a sinking ship. We are already far behind the SEC in revenue. The gap will only grow. Up till now revenue hasn’t mattered but I believe that could change with the new NIL stuff. It would be depressing if we ended up with either Cincinnati or UCF. Neither would help us financially and WV would only marginally help. ND is literally the only team that moves the needles and I don’t blame them for wanting to stay independent. Granted if SEC doesn’t come knocking We don’t have a choice but if they have I would be completely surprised that DRAD and Clements wouldn’t jump ship. I call BS on loyalty.

ND may feel the time is right to join the ACC since they need to solidify the conference and have their say in matters. It’s rumored that a condition of ND joining is a contractual agreement that the conference will never align/merge with the SEC.

Jul 27, 2021, 7:54 PM

I still think it’s most likely we end up going to SEC. it’s cheaper for ESPN to pay 2-4 ACC schools the delta between ACC money and SEC money, and they’re the ones driving the bus.

Curious what ND’s calculus is. They could have a vested interest in not wanting to see a super 2 conference, as that’d force them to either join the BIG or the SEC. They may want to see the ACC survive for their own selfish reasons. ND, PSU, WVU might change things. ESPN would be able to damage NBC, Fox, etc… with that kind of move, and could warrant them opening up their wallets.

WVU OK. Cincy is and will always be small-time. He'll no to adding them.

You don’t add just to be adding ————— be BOLD!

Jul 27, 2021, 8:01 PM

Don’t try and be the SEC - be a great ACC.
I would not add schools that are not good academic schools - other than ND - that is all you listed. It is better to retain your conference values than deteriorate the prestige.

I would give ND an ultimatum- time to get off the pot!

If no, then go after:
Top schools that also bring football.

Who really would have thought that Oklahoma and Texas would leave to go to the SEC?

How about Ohio state, penn state, mich state, Michigan?
Maybe like Texas a&m - Michigan wants to get away from Ohio state for a bit. Maybe penn state is open to move?

Yes - far fetched - but so was ok and Texas.

Be bold, don’t take the crumbs still on the table.

If we expand at all, take ok st and a Texas team. Tell ND you're either ALL IN or ALL out. It's not like we haven't made it without ND. Has it helped, probably. But I don't think ND wants B1G either but they have to know schedule would be difficult because all p4 conferences would have at least 16 teams. Imo that forces their hand.

Plus ok st and a tex team expands our coverage. Eyeballs in Cali might watch Clemson/ok st but who's going to get pumped watching Clemson/wva

Of course ND would be the most help to the ACC Next in my humble opinion would be Cincinnati and TCU This would expose the ACC to Ohio and Texas which are two great recruiting states WV would not help in recruiting at all and would not help any TV market No SEC team or Big 10 team that the ACC team would want will come PAC 12 is too far away and the better teams would not be interested Swofford May have been able to get Texas but his mentality has always been Tobacco Road Basketball

Jul 27, 2021, 8:49 PM

So everyone can exhale and relax right now. Clemson won't be the next domino to fall, at least not this year.

The heat is on. By 2024/25, if Clemson determines it is best to move on, bye bye ACC. However, until circumstances change (enough), we are most definitely NOT going to leave the ACC. No need to ask us about this anymore.
