playoff this year. If the favorites win their respective conference championship games this weekend, the next 4 would be hard to pick amongst a bunch of two loss teams.
Ohio State and Stanford would be the only "locks" out of that next 4 to get in, IMO, and even then you would have arguments against.

& when the SEC gets left out, we will have an 8 team playoff the very next year. The SEC will also push for not limiting the at large teams from any one conference. When it goes to eight, there should not be more than one at large team per conference.

I think it'll be 6 before it is 8. Clemson would almost surely still be in if its 8 and it would create weird incentives where teams would almost prefer not to play a conference championship game

This is why a four team playoff makes the most sense. If Clemson were to loose in a playoff game to a two loss ND team, would ND deserve the national Championship over Clemson?
