I read that they tried to sue Southern Cal for exclusive rights in like 2010 or 2011 and lost so they decided to put the “of” in their name at that time. Evidently didn’t age well.

I always thought it was because everybody outside of Richland County wouldn't buy tickets because it was a long drive to Southern California.

got jumbled. Their coot brains flipped the letters around and instead sued to get the rights to "USC."
And since USC already owned the patent/trademark on "USC," the coot lawyers opted to take the L in court rather than admit the initial error that gave rise to the ill-fated suit.
An investigation was convened in Columbia. "How could "S-U-C" be jumbled so easily?!," came the anguished barnyard cry.
After several blind/double-blind studies over the course of about a decade, they realized if a Tiger and a chicken come in close contact, the Tiger tends to beat the chicken about the head. CTE sets in. Mental capacities wane. Letters get jumbled. Lawsuits are filed. It's sad, really. PETA would have a field day.
