“I was pretty nervous up there, definitely got the weak knees,” Guillermo said. “I get butterflies before a game but not weak knees. I really don’t know why. I came over and told my grandfather it happened and I didn’t know why.”

Rated as one of the best college prospects at center in the nation, the Maryville senior won out over fellow Class AAA line finalist Brett Dillard from Mt. Juliet High and Andrew Jelks from Henry County High. The only bitterweet note after being presented the award by former Tennessee Titan Kevin Dyson was that the teammate he spends so much time protecting had not also won.

“It was tough,” Guillermo said. “Patton’s my boy. I wanted him to win, but it’s an honor just to be a finalist. I was thinking about it on the way over here. Even if you don’t win, it’s an honor just to be recognized as one of the top three in AAA.”
