Tigers Will Know the Future of Receiver Class Soon

CLEMSON - Tuesday's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft could play more of a

featured role in Clemson's football future than anyone realized. By the end

of the day, the Tigers could be facing the very real possibility of opening

the 2001 season with just one of its “Fab Four” wide receiver recruits

signed last February.

Roscoe Crosby, the Union High School two-sport star prodigy, is expected to

be taken in the draft's first 3-5 rounds. In fact, a report Monday from

ESPN.com had Crosby pegged as a top 10 pick in the opening round.

If that scenario holds true, barring an unforeseen change of heart by any

one of the 30 MLB teams, Crosby will be offered a signing bonus which should

approach - or easily exceed - seven figures. That alone could be enough to

convince the highly-coveted receiver to forego football for the immediate

future and concentrate solely on baseball.

If not, it wouldn't be surprising for whomever drafts Crosby to sweeten the

deal in an attempt to get him on the diamond exclusively.

If that happens, it could be the first of several disappointments for

Clemson fans.

As of today, of the Tigers' other three highly-touted wide receiver signees

- Ty Zimmerman of Marlboro County High School, Derrick Higgins of Lamar and

Airese Currie of Richlands Northeast - only Currie has met all NCAA and/or

Clemson entrance requirements.

Roscoe Crosby, the Union High School two-sport star prodigy, is expected to be taken in the MLB draft's first couple of rounds.

Both Higgins and Zimmerman took the SAT for the final time last Saturday.

The results of this last-ditch effort to qualify will be available June 15.

It's not known how far off Higgins was in his last attempt at the SAT, but

Marlboro County head coach Dean Boyd said Monday that Zimmerman was within

20 points of qualifying on his previous test. Boyd expressed optimism that

Zimmerman would make up the difference when these results are released.

"Twenty points equals about two correct answers,” Boyd said. "We're hoping

he can pull it off."

One other incoming receiver, 6-foot-5, 225-pound tight end Ben Hall from

Byrnes High School, has already qualified, his mother said Monday evening.
