Swinney gives Furman permission to speak with Napier |
CLEMSON -- Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney said prior to practice Monday night that he had given permission to Furman University to speak with Clemson offensive coordinator Billy Napier about their head coach position next week after Clemson has finished its regular season.
Last week, Furman head coach Bobby Lamb said he would resign after the Paladins' season finale. Lamb is stepping down following a fourth season in which Furman missed the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Napier lettered four times (1999-02) at Furman and was a two-time captain as a starting quarterback. He holds the Paladin career record for completion percentage (64.8) and is third in school history in passing yards (4,247). He also set the school single-season record with 2,475 passing yards and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (FCS National Player-of-the-Year) during the 2002 season. Also, Clemson running back Andre Ellington did not practice, but did some running on the side Monday night. His status for Saturday’s game with South Carolina will be evaluated later in the week.
