MIAMI -- Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin was taken to a nearby hospital for X-rays and tests after a freak accident as he was running the bases in the second inning of Sunday's game against the Marlins at Sun Life Stadium, according to MLB.com

Catcher Welington Castillo's bat broke as he was hitting a double to left field and the sharp end of the bat punctured Colvin's left side below the collarbone as he was headed to the plate to score.

A team spokesman said Colvin suffered minimal external bleeding, though the depth of the wound was not immediately clear.

The spokesman said Colvin was in stable condition as he was being transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

UPDATE: More than likely the injury will end Colvin's season. He'll spend the next several days in the hospital while doctors try to prevent him from having a collapsed lung.
