Spring Practice: Tiger Defense Struggles Wednesday |
CLEMSON - As has been the case for much of the spring, Clemson's offense got the better of its defense in Wednesday's practice. And it didn't seem to matter where on the field the scrimmaging occurred, either. Be it in goal line situations. the red zone or midfield, Tiger defenders struggled to find a rhythm for much of the afternoon. Much of it, head coach Tommy Bowden said, was due to poor tackling. "You'd like to see defense win three out of four or all of them," Bowden said. "We have tackled pretty good, to be honest with you. But we didn't today." The chief culprit was tailback C.J. Spiller. Running with a renewed zeal between the tackles, Spiller has had an outstanding spring. Wednesday was no exception. "We couldn't stop him," said Bowden. "He scored about every time he touched the ball. They couldn't tackle him." In other notes from Wednesday: - Bowden again singled out the play of linebacker Stanley Hunter and Marquan Jones; - Punter Richard Jackson's momentum in his race with Jimmy Maners for the No. 1 spot slowed on Wednesday after a less-than-stellar day kicking; - James Davis is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Thursday. - The team will resume practice on Friday.
