Basketball: Mays Injury Not As Serious As First Thought

by - Correspondent -

CLEMSON - The Clemson basketball program received some good news Wednesday.

A bone scan of James Mays' injured hip revealed no fracture, and team doctors believe it is a severe sprain. Mays injured the hip during a fall in the second half of Clemson's game with Gardner-Webb last Saturday. He did not play in the Tigers' 61-58 victory over Purdue Tuesday night.

"We are obviously encouraged by the results of James' bone scans. We are hopeful he will be ready to go by the time we play in Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout," said head coach Oliver Purnell. "We also are anticipating getting Sam Perry back for the Puerto Rico tournament as well. He is awfully important to this team in terms of not only his defensive ability, but also more importantly, his leadership."

Perry, recovering from knee surgery, has been practicing in limited fashion in recent days. He has been cleared for more intense work at practice effective immediately.

Clemson is back in action at 4 p.m. Saturday, hosting South Carolina.
