Virginia Takes Series Opener 2-1 Over #2 Clemson

Charlottesville, VA -

Brandon Marsh's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning lifted Virginia to a 2-1 victory over #2 Clemson on Friday afternoon in front of 1,304 fans at UVa Baseball Stadium. The Cavaliers took a 1-0 series lead and improved to 17-4 overall, including 2-2 in ACC play. The Tigers fell to 11-4 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

Lefthanders Sean Doolittle and Casey Lambert limited the Tigers to just four hits, including only two after the first inning. Lambert (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record the win, while Doolittle was outstanding in 8.0 innings of work, allowing only four hits, one run, and one walk with nine strikeouts. Tiger reliever Daniel Moskos (1-2) suffered the loss despite allowing just one unearned run in 2.2 innings pitched. Starter Josh Cribb struck out eight and allowed only one run in 5.2 innings pitched as well.

The Tigers wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning. Herman Demmink led off with a walk and advanced to second on Brad Chalk's groundout to shortstop. Taylor Harbin then laid down a bunt single and Tyler Colvin brought home Demmink with a bloop single to center. But that was all the run production the Tigers would muster all game.

After the Tigers stranded runners on second and third in the top of the fifth, the Cavaliers tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Greg Miclat hit a one-out double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Brandon Marsh lined a two-out double to right-center to plate Miclat.

Virginia finally came through with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Tim Henry drew a leadoff walk, stole second after getting a great jump, and went to third on a throwing error. Then Marsh connected on a fly ball deep enough to easily plate Henry for the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Andy D'Alessio and Adrian Casanova each had doubles for the Tigers. Demmink's 10-game hitting streak came to an end for the Tigers, who fell to 1-3 in one-run games in 2006. Henry and Marsh each had two hits, as the team had eight in all. Marsh also had both of the Cavalier RBIs. Virginia stranded 11 runners on base as well.

Clemson, who has lost its four games by a combined seven runs, and Virginia will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
