Playoff committee chairman explains why Clemson over Alabama for #1 rank |
College Football Playoff committee chairman Jeff Long discussed on Sunday the committee's rationale for picking Clemson over Alabama as the #1 seed in the playoff.
"After the games played this weekend, for us in the committee room, Clemson was a clear-cut No. 1,” Long said. "I think they had three wins over top 10 teams, I think maybe 8, 9 and ten as I recall." "Alabama had three top 25 wins, but I think the top position was trumped by Clemson’s three top 10 wins, and that really had an impact." Clemson finished off a perfect 13-0 season with a 45-37 win over North Carolina on Saturday night. "Certainly being undefeated, going through that entire schedule 13 games and not stumbling," Long said. "Yes, that was significant in ultimately them being No. 1." Clemson will next face Oklahoma in the Capital One Orange Bowl on New Year's Eve at 4 PM on ESPN. . @BHancockCFP estimated @ClemsonDRad missed about 13 hours of debate per recusal, and CFP asked him to recuse himself from all top 5 deb8 "We just didn't want him to have any say in who Clemson was playing." - @BHancockCFP on @ClemsonDRad . @ClemsonDRad was recused from Clemson talk all season, but only in past 2 rankings was he given the boot for entire top 5 discussions. Correction, sorry, @ClemsonDRad missed about FIVE hours roughly 15 hours of deliberation. @BHancockCFP
