Venables on coaching rumors: "My focus is right here"

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables' name has come up in reports this week about open head coaching positions at two SEC schools already, in Arkansas and Mississippi State.

Venables held his regular pregame press conference Tuesday, where he addressed those reports.

"My focus is completely on this game and this week and the great job I do have and the great players I get to coach every week," Venables said. "My focus is right here."

A CBS Sports report earlier this week cited sources with influential Arkansas supporters pushing for Venables among their top candidates. A Football Scoop report cited sources in Mississippi State seeking an interview with Venables.

Asked if he was bothered by the reports during a game week, Venables said he only hears about it from the press.

"I don't hear about it otherwise because I just don't spend any time focused on that," Venables said. "I've got a great job. I've said that many, many times. I'm very grateful and thankful for that. We're in a great position so why would I be focused on what's on the other side of the fence. I've always felt that way.

"If people have interest, that's part of it. You either decide to listen or not. Right now we've got a tremendous opportunity this week playing for a championship and my loyalty is to here and our players."
