New Gamecocks coach revives Spurrier’s “That team in the upstate” when discussing Clemson |
Shane Beamer held his introductory press conference as the new head football coach at South Carolina on Monday afternoon.
The 43-year-old is a former Gamecock assistant (2007-2010) and the son of former legendary Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. Beamer was asked from Phil Kornblut about competing against in-state rival Clemson, who has been a powerhouse of a program the last decade while the Gamecocks have been mired in mediocrity. He called Clemson "that team in the upstate" before answering the question. "They are certainly on a pretty good run right now, but when I was here before, we were on a pretty dang good run ourselves against those guys as well," he said. "It's a big challenge, and we're going to work every single day in recruiting in this facility to have a team that we can be proud of on the field and as a result of the way we play on the field and, and certainly I have great respect for those guys but looking forward to getting in there and competing." The use of "that team in the upstate" terminology was occasionally used by former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier before leaving the program. “I guess the upstate team got beat today, is that correct?” Spurrier trolled at a press conference. “What was that score of the Georgia Tech game. (Deshaun Watson) got hurt again? ...That game, looks like we’re in better shape than two weeks ago, right?”
