Clemson signee drafted in MLB second round |
Clemson outfielder signee Parker Meadows was drafted with the 44th pick in the second round by the Detroit Tigers.
The slotted contract for the 44th pick is worth $1,625,500. Meadows (Grayson HS, Ga.), a Perfect Game All-American, was ranked the No. 42 prospect by MLB.com going into the draft. He had draft projections as high as the first 22 picks in the first round. Meadows hit .342 with 30 RBIs and 17 extra-base hits over 36 games as a senior. He committed to Clemson in July 2016. His brother Austin was also a Clemson signee, who was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates and signed shortly afterward - recently making his MLB debut after a 2013 selection. Meadows has until a mid-July deadline to sign a pro contract. Meadow's MLB.com draft profile: “With the leverage and projectable strength in his 6-foot-4 frame, Meadows has plus raw power. His size also means he has a naturally long left-handed swing that has led to inconsistent contact against quality pitching on the showcase circuit. He has made some adjustments this spring, standing less upright and shortening his stride, but can look hesitant at times. “The top prospect in Clemson's recruiting class, Meadows earns plus to well above-average grades for his speed and solid to plus grades for his arm. With those tools, he can play anywhere in the outfield and should have no problems staying in center.
