Tigers Hold On For 4-3 Victory Over Coastal Carolina

CLEMSON, SC - The #8 Clemson Tigers defeated the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson improved to 9-1 while Coastal Carolina dropped to 11-3.

Clemson starter Steve Reba threw 5.0 innings of no-hit ball before giving way to Mike Proto. Reba has allowed only one hit and no runs in 11.0 innings this season. Reba did not factor in the decision, as reliever Matt Additon (2-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to get the win. Nick Glaser pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fifth save. Clemson pitchers limited Coastal Carolina to three singles. Chanticleer starter Rett Johnson allowed three runs and struck out seven in 6.0 innings, but did not factor in the decision. Josh Rush (1-1) took the loss.

Clemson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Casey Stone led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base. After Ryan Riley reached first on a hit-by-pitch, Patrick Boyd singled home Stone. Boyd went 2-for-2 on the afternoon and was the only player in the game to tally two hits. The Tigers put their second and third runs on the board when Riley and Boyd scored on a two-run groundout to the first baseman by Henrí Stanley. Boyd scored from second base on the play.

The score remained 3-0 until the top half of the seventh inning when the Chanticleers added three runs of their own. Adam Keim walked and back-to-back singles from Jason Davis and Doug Marty loaded the bases. The Chanticleers would then score three consecutive runs without the ball leaving the infield. Keim scored when Jon Humay was hit by an Additon pitch, and Davis scored on a walk by Mario Gianfortune. The Chanticleers added their third and final run of the ballgame when Marty scored on pinch-hitter Tony Stokes' groundout.

The Tigers took the lead back in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Mike Calitri walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Casey Stone. Khalil Greene drove in Calitri with the winning run on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Clemson will play host to UNLV this weekend in its next action. Game times are 3:00 Friday, 2:00 Saturday, and 1:00 Sunday.
