Leo, the Basset Hound, may he rest in peace

Well today was a day I dreaded. I got the call from my parents that the family Basset Hound, Leo, died in his sleep overnight. We got him when I was a freshman in college, 10 years ago, as a rescue dog.
I had no idea that he would end up as such a loyal dog. He was a bit of a clown, he hated cats, loved peanut butter, bread, carmel treats and meaty bones. When I pulled away from my parent's driveway after a visit, he would just stand in front of the gate and just stare at you with long, drawn eyes.
He was very playful, mostly just wanted his belly patted and time for at least 4 to 5 naps a day.
He declined quickly over the last few weeks. I almost suspect he had a cancer or something. I saw him last yesterday. He didn't seem like he recognized me and was wheezing a bit. My parents buried him next to his doghouse this evening, which is the way to go: asleep in your doghouse with full years.
Here's to you Leo, may you rest in peace little friend!

It was a year ago Sunday that I lost one of my labs, a day shy of her 12th birthday. I still miss her.

It's really tough losing your dog.
There is a story told by the American Indians that the Great Spirit decided to divide the worlds of animal and man so he gathered all the living beings on a great plain and drew a line in the dirt. On one side of the line stood man --- on the other side stood all of the animals. And that line began to open up into a great crevasse - and at the last moment before it became unreachable, dog leapt over and stood by man.
