Pig's Retirement Countdown... Last Day!!!

This will be my last day in the working world.
My wife and I have already started taking trips and seeing the world. We went to Venice and Greece back in June. In May we’ll be taking my son (who graduates from Clemson on May 9th) to London and Paris, and we are currently planning a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. We also just got an invite to go to Cancun with about 6 other couples for a surprise birthday celebration in October. We will continue to take both long and short trips over the next 8-10 years before we start to slow down. 60-70 is go time… 70-80 is slow time… 80+ is no time…
My 1st home projects after retirement are to replace the springs on the garage doors, reroof the screen porch, and then gut our existing bedroom closet and remodel it to my wife’s specifications. I hope that retirement is everything I expect it to be. I hope that our health will last a long long time. My parents are both 94 years old, so with my genetics and all the medical advances in the world, I see no reason I can’t live to be 145 to 150 years old.
Wish me luck!! Pig

Remember, It’s better to wear out than rust out. Keep looking through the front windshield. This will your chapter to write with no outside influences to dictate your story. My first day on retirement I shot my alarm clock now retirement is everything I thought and hoped it would be. Congratulations and May God continue to bless you and your family.

Go in October or early November. A little cooler, but smaller crowds.
Also, go online to the Nat'l Park Service and buy a senior Lifetime Pass. You'll thank me later.

First of all, don't trust what main media said about China. China is one of the most safest countries to visit. Go to Youtube or Reddit to get real information from others Second, China has some natural and historical wonders in the world and different food Third, Most of young Chinese can understand and speak a little English. You can also use translate APPS in your phone. Communication won't be the problem The most of important is the cost. With the same budge, you will get much better experience in China than in Europe or Mexico

"superman"? That's funny because my last name often autocorrects to superman - a school secretary laughed out loud yesterday when her phone did that when she was texting someone to let them know I was there.

I resented but understood your age comment where 80 + is close to the end of the line (ole JOE21 at 99 would have opined) but you’re right that one can not be a Sissy and survive it.
Lastly, be careful replacing that garage door spring(s) since they can cause injury and/or death.
Enjoy Sir..what I did 21 years ago and never looked back!!

I always tell people, retire as soon as you can
2
Feb 23, 2024, 2:33 PM
|
|
I post this as a message to people who may be on the fence about retiring
I have raised some eyebrows in my world because I took an early retirement. I shut my business down and quit working long before most people do.
Why?
Four of my best friends from high school are already dead (before age 52). They never saw a minute of freedom in their life, worked until their last day on earth. Very sobering. I watched the same thing happen to two of my uncles, who literally died on the job.
Life expectancy right now sits around 77 years. That’s an average, so 50% of people don’t see 77. If you work till you’re 65 and you are a man, there is good chance you’ll only get 5-10 years of freedom before you die. The government wants you to work in till you’re 65, because they’re taking a bet that you only live a few more years, and you’ll die and it won’t have to pay your Social Security or Medicare benefits. What is this “retirement age” of 65 anyway? It’s a bogus number created by people who want you to work until you die. The moment it’s financially viable for you to retire, do it. You won’t regret it. It’s the best decision I ever made. We can travel with no problem. We do it on the cheap, because when you’ve got time to figure out inexpensive ways to do things, you can. $40 hotel rooms, $200 plane tickets, public transportation, it’s all out there for you. You can find discount travel anywhere in the world. Sure, we’ve had to do without hot water and air conditioning a few times, so what?
Also, once your kid hits 18, they should be mostly financially autonomous. Outside of maybe giving them an old car, it’s not your sole responsibility to provide them with a $200,000 college education, expensive clothes, insurance and spending money. They can help pay their way, and you can retire.
Life is meant for living, not working till you fall over dead and everything you’ve ever work for is in somebody else’s hands…

I agree with almost all of that and worked my way into retiring just prior to my 60th birthday. The only point I disagree with is that I felt an obligation to get my kids through college if they wanted to go. Then they were expected to be self sufficient. Probably because my dad felt the same way and did the same for me until he had to retire on disability and couldn’t pay for the last year. I took a loan for that. Not saying that either is wrong or right, just a different opinion. But definitely agree about retiring as soon as fiscally possible and enjoying whatever time we have left.
