Would an armed audience have helped in Colorado

Jul 20, 2012, 10:58 AM

(warning- long rant, csb, did not read to follow)

I didn't want to threadjack, so I started a new one.

Here's the deal- yes there were "smoke bombs" or "tear gas" (have seen both quoted) and yes, he had on body armor and a riot helmet... BUT

Suppose you take your wife and children to see a movie and this guy busts in. He starts shooting and ends up at the edge of your row in the aisle. He turns toward your daughter, lifts his gun... STOP

At this moment, would you rather be the guy with no gun, who is going to jump toward him knowing you're going to to get shot and likely die right in front of your daughter and wife, or would you prefer to have a .40 in the holster from the moment he steps into the theater, trying to find a way to protect your family?

YES- I know that even with guns, alot of people would have likely died in the process of getting this guy down. YES- I know that it's tough to hit vitals when someone has on body armor and a riot helmet, especially with smoke/gas in the air. YES- I know that the VAST majority of the population has a flight instinct and has no desire to save innocent lives when someone like this starts firing a gun, and very few people have the intestinal fortitude to even attempt to stay put or mount a counter-offensive.

HOWEVER, with no firearm, and a family with women and children that stand no chance of fighting the stampede out the door, you got 2 options- human shield OR stand there and watch your family die. Me personally, I'd rather at least attempt to get close enough to put one through his neck while he's turned the other way, or else at least show him what a few bullets through his legs and arms feel like on his way to he ll. Think about it- if even 3 people in that theater were armed and brave, they could have gotten to him before he could shoot all three, given him what he deserved (a warm swim in a lake of fire), and saved dozens of innocent lives.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but "everyone should just run as best they can to safety" and "there's nothing you can do if he has on body armor or throws a smoke bomb" are just not intelligent responses, and they lead to no solutions for dealing with situations like this. Everyone who is capable with a weapon should carry- not only for their sake, but for the sake of helping protect others as well, whether the innocents are family or just human beings that deserve our help. And NEARLY everyone can become capable with a weapon if they train. No excuses- do what you can to help. By the time the police arrive, it's just for a report. WE have to help protect innocent people. All of us.

If you had a few cops or military, trained and armed and

Jul 20, 2012, 11:05 AM

sober, they might have been able to stop him with less carnage than what happened.

But IMO if you had a handful of non-trained, possibly non-sober civilians with guns, a shootout in that theater would have been likely, and probably would have resulted in more casualties.

IMO.

Sorry man, but I disagree fully. If nothing else, the "flight" crowd would have had cover fire.

Jul 20, 2012, 11:13 AM [ in reply to If you had a few cops or military, trained and armed and ]

and having a CWP. Than no one being able to defend what went on in that theater.

Yes with the hysteria that went on I'm sure even someone trained could have hit a innocent person. It's a better alternative than what happened last evening.

I usually carry when I go to the movies. And people have asked, why what's going to happen there? Well we've seen what can happen.

Tomorrow when we go see Batman I probably won't carry because of the knee jerk reaction that this will cause. I'm sure they will be extra vigilant for awhile.

Jul 20, 2012, 11:48 AM

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I used to think that. I don't any longer.

Jul 20, 2012, 11:51 AM

Someone who doesn't know if I have a gun is probably less likely to attempt anything malicious if he thinks he's going to get shot as soon as he attempts it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see any historical precedence for that assumption.

Jul 20, 2012, 12:00 PM

In the past, in societies where carrying weapons was commonplace, so was settling one's arguments in the street. If all the "law-abiding" citizens become armed, the criminal element will just up the ante. Knowing the other side was armed never stopped a gang war.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jul 20, 2012, 12:05 PM

A few weeks ago I was at a boat landing where I was "harrassed" by a group of dudes..much larger than I am. It was just me...and 4-5 of them. I'm not a big guy, and would have had no chance had it become physical. I was able to get out with out injury..but it got to a point where I was VERY uncomfortable. Were they to merely see that I was carrying..I don't think it would have occurred.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had the day off and went out on my boat by myself.

Jul 20, 2012, 12:23 PM

When I came in and there was of dudes in a POS boat that pulled in right behind me. Landing was empty..just us, on a weekday. Not much trafic at all.

I took notice of them, and started gettinng everything put up, trying to hurry to go get my truck. As soon as they got to the the dock, they started asking me if I had any beer, and also what kind of depth finder I had on my boat. They continued while I was tieing up, and I noticed then that two of them were all of a sudden at the front of my boat on the dock, and two were behind me on the dock staring at me. They kept on about having any "beer to lend" and then they started with "how much did that boat cost?" I kind of laughed it off--"nope, no beer, sorry" and just ignored the how much did it cost stuff--but they really didn't want to take "no" for an answer. They kept on with it.I knew where this was going. I could tell what I felt like was about to happen, and luckily about that time someone else drove up to put their boat in and thy kind of shut up.

I basically jumped off my boat in front of the two dudes in front of my boat--almost busted my @ss. I'll admit it--whether legitamitely or not--my jimmies were rustled. That landing doesn't get much traffic during the week. And it was low tide. They could have beat the crap out of me and tossed me in the water and noone would have seen or heard it.

Luckily 2 or 3 more trucks came down to put their boats in while I was off getting my truck. Had that not happened..I'm not sure of the outcome. I do feel like had they seen me strapping on a gun, the whole exchange would have been different...at least for me.

Jul 20, 2012, 12:33 PM

Why don't you try it, and look beyond the Lott report. But I wasn't referring to recent crime statistics, but a more historical context. I'm not talking about concealed weapons laws. I'm talking about a fully armed society, which is what some seem to endorse here. History is pretty clear about those societies: you'd better be quick, or you'll die with that gun in your hand. I think we can do better than that, as people, and as a country.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would if I had time

Jul 20, 2012, 12:51 PM

But this #### job is requiring way too much effort today.

I'm not referring to the Lott report, but all my sources would be from mostly pro-gun publishers that I've read over the years which would be quickly dismissed by most gun control advocates regardless of validity.
IMO, lawful gun ownership is the responsible citizen's only option against the portion of illigally armed society. I hear you about a fully armed society, old West/Mad Max style. Unfortunately, part of our society is already there so I plan to be as prepared as possible to protect me and my family and hope like hell not to ever need it.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And just carrying doesn't automatically stop the threat. If there were any folks carrying in there (which btw is illegal in NC), I seriously doubt they were trained to use their weapons in a chaotic, dark, tear gas laden confined space while being shot at. Most LEO's aren't prepared for that.

You are sitting their watching the movie. It's dark and your night vision sucks because the screen is flashing. Then, bang, some sort of smoke starts pouring into the theatre from behind you. Now shots start coming, people are screaming, jumping over seats, trampling people. You are looking for who is shooting, but you're pretty much hemmed in by the mass of humanity heading toward the exit. Do you really think you could identify the shooter, pull your weapon, and eliminate him without shooting the guy that flashes in front of you on the way out the door?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jul 20, 2012, 12:26 PM

In the dark with people running and screaming and smoke pouring in, with the film creating a strobe light effect you would be able to single out the shooter, and get close enough to shoot him without shooting someone else or having him shoot you with the AK he is packing, I'm impressed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

4.55 and 375 but who's counting

Jul 20, 2012, 12:35 PM

relax, I'm just joking.

Plus, I think "strobe light effect" is a bit of an exaggeration for a movie theater. I do believe I could identify the shooter, especially since he started shooting from in front of the audience, but the rest... no I haven't shot enough to say I could have hit him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Carrying a gun in theatre might give me a warm, fuzzy...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are missing the point

Jul 20, 2012, 12:29 PM

The guy had an AK, you have a pistol. He has a plan, you have no idea whats going on. He has no specific targets, you have to pick him out in a dark, crowded theatre filled with smoke. He doesn't care who he shoots, you can't just start blasting off shots in his general direction without killing innocent people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just curl up in the fetal position and whimper.

Jul 20, 2012, 12:33 PM

2009_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe you should just squeeze off random shots in the chaos

Jul 20, 2012, 12:35 PM

That doesn't seem like a solution either. There is no good choices in this situation. I'm guessing most people would head for the exit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Random shots?

Jul 20, 2012, 12:36 PM

You can't "shoot back" without shooting someone else. You've got to hit him in the first shot.

Jul 20, 2012, 1:00 PM [ in reply to Dude was wearing a gas mask ]

"The shooting unfolded inside a darkened theater packed with Batman fans, some in costume for the movie's premiere. Screaming, panicked moviegoers scrambled to escape from the black-clad gunman, who wore a gas mask and randomly shot as he walked up the theater's steps, witnesses said."

Maybe not as easy as it seems. Plus if the guy is walking on the steps, the only chance you have is if you're sitting at the end of the isle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How many had gas masks on, shooting at people?

If nothing else, I suggest that either you are your Ranger instructor pal invest in an Impact Seal Ground Target. Stop shooting at paper and try some moving targets. It'll be good practice for you. Obviously, you have no confidence with a firearm and you are the type of individual that you and others are afraid of, with concealed carry.

Its not the fact that he is moving

Jul 20, 2012, 1:24 PM [ in reply to Its not the fact that he is moving ]

Sorry if my posts come off as antagonistic. It's just that you really don't seem to think that you or anyone else, for that matter, could actually pull off capping this guy.

2009_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm decent, my Ranger buddy is incredible

Jul 20, 2012, 1:29 PM

Still, I think the only chance you would have to hit him would be in that 10 to 20 second period when he first starts shooting and people are in their seats. I think by the time you figure out what is happening it would be too late to get a shot off. Have you ever been sitting in the movie theatre and had to pee. It was hard as heck to get to the end of the isle without tromping on a fat chicks foot and tripping into someones lap. Now imagine everyone is up and jumping over seats desperately trying to get to the exist. There is no chance you can get a shot at the guy then.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So what would be your solution

Jul 20, 2012, 1:36 PM [ in reply to So what would be your solution ]

I only have a shot at the guy hopping over the seat in front of me. Seeing as how I have no reason to shoot him, I would probably head toward the exist scared as hell with the rest of the crowd. The design of a crowded movie theatre is not conducive to accurate shooting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Accurate shooting.

Jul 20, 2012, 1:43 PM

That's a reasonable assessment. With most concealed weapons, anything past 30' or so, you might as well just throw it at 'em.

2009_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here is the thing, I'm not against concealed weapons

Jul 20, 2012, 1:52 PM

I don't feel the need to carry one, but if others do, then as long as they have the training and are in practice, go for it. However, I don't think it would have helped in this situation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In that scenario, I may have been in luck.

Jul 20, 2012, 1:35 PM [ in reply to I'm decent, my Ranger buddy is incredible ]

I always try to sit on the aisle end. However, as my luck goes, I'd probably be on the wrong side.

Multiple shooters in a dark, crowded room where everyone is panicing would have made things a lot better.

Or one, calm person who actually had a decent shot could have saved a lot of folks. Not something I'd speculate too heavily on.

You don't have to have a concealed permit to carry

Jul 23, 2012, 12:41 PM

I am not sure why everyone is going nutso to get a CWP. If you are going to carry a gun, be a man about it and carry it, like John Wayne. We too often forget that this is legal. CWP lets you shoot yourself in the leg or #### because most people have zero reason to have a CWP and hiding a gun..
