Sophomore quarterback Syvelle Newton wasn’t available for comment on Monday. But his high school coach said he feared Holtz’s departure, coupled with the today’s arrival of Steve Spurrier as his replacement, will mean a position change for Newton.

“We all know what Spurrier likes to see in a quarterback: Tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed,” Marlboro County High coach Dean Boyd said. “I fear it’s not going to be good for Syvelle. Syvelle’s a good college quarterback, but he isn’t the kind of quarterback (Spurrier) would go for.”
