What's the deal with these points when you post something...

On Tiger Board? Do you get rewards for so many?

You get a point when someone clicks the "thumbs up" rating

in your post. You get a point for a "thumbs up" vote and a negative point for a "thumbs down". I guess it is supposed to be some sort of reward system. One thing I noticed though is that the points don't always seem to be accurate. Some people have a point total that is not possible with the sum of the their "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ratings, some people have personal vendettas against others and always vote negative, and some people are even going as far as logging in with another handle and voting for themselves. Somebody mentioned some scientific word for people who do that. I guess over time it will push folks to toe the company line, and also be more pollitcially correct and non-offensive when they post. I also imagine many won't care about points. Other than that, it seems pretty neat.

Yeah, well, I just gave you a thumbs-up. ;) And yeah, there's definitely vendettas involved...here you just hit the nail on the head about the point system with a very intelligent, pertinent post...and yet it got three or four thumbs-down. Which means your post wasn't being judged on its merits.

I was up to around 70 points last night...and I wake up this morning and I'm around 50...so just out of idle curiosity I start leafing around, and sure enough someone has gone around and thumbed-down all my posts. Either that or all the stuff I wrote that was worthy of points in the light of day looked a lot worse after 10:00 PM last night.

Uh...yeah, right.

I'm ambivelant on the point system, personally, for exactly this reason. You give people a handle on others, a certain number of weenies are going to abuse it and try to vote someone off the island with it. Which turns Tigernet into a fargin' popularity contest.

I've noticed the same thing

My point totals seem to swing wildly, so bad that I thought that maybe the software wasn't working correctly. But by doing a little digging I saw that people seem to be selecting certain posts and voting them down. However, I've also noticed that some of the thumbs down stuff seems to be more personal rather than content oriented. Some people's posts seem to get voted down no matter what they say, and I don't think it's all coots coming in here and doing it either.

The main problem in convincing stupid people that they are stupid, is that they are usually too stupid to comprehend their own stupidity.

I don't need any stink'n points, unless someone's paying up a dollar or more per point ;)

I liked the old rating system better.

If someone made a "bad" post, you just didn't respond, or if you felt it was worthy of a response you responded and told them what you thought. Everybody knew who the trolls and devisive posters were, so you still had the choice of ignoring certain posts altogether.

I don't really care about my own point total one way or the other, but I can see that it has already become a devisive tool for many and is not accomplishing it's intended purpose.
