Why do basketball coaches wear suits?

Jan 31, 2018, 9:48 PM

While football coaches wear school apparel and baseball coaches wear a uniform?

Would look funny in just underwear.

Al Golden wore them at Miami if I recall correctly. Hot place for a dark business suit.

And Yes I am aware he was not coach of a professional team - maybe a team with well compensated players, but not pro. :)

I believe many other cfb coaches wore them back in the day as well. Golden may have been the last tho. I don't know of any today.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Golden always wore a white shirt with a tie

Feb 1, 2018, 8:39 PM [ in reply to Re: NFL coaches used to wear suits too. ]

But never a full on suit

Must have been awfully uncomfortable

I think I recall an NFL coach actually taking a fine for paying tribute to a coach by wearing a suit. They have licensing deals that require different attire. Pretty silly

Jan 31, 2018, 10:15 PM

I don't think there is a better answer than just the natural evolution of things. Tom Landry in his suit and hat looked great (I hate the Cowboys). Bobby Cox in his #6 Uni at age 70? looked a bit re-donk (I love the Braves). A suit looks professional. If you're not going into the game then give up the uni. Then there's the hoodie...

1. Proximity to the fans.

2. Most coaches develop cellulite on the back of their thighs about the same time they get promoted.

3. Shingles are not compatible with seersucker suits or polyester leisure suits.

4. Everyone wants to look like Rick Barnes when he was here in the early 90's.

It’s the mafia go to uniform whether they are helping others or making money off of them. Maybe to cover up the idea they could fix games to make money through gambling.

Or

To impress at their next job interview Incase they review the tape. To look like they are professional at what they do!

To look their best in front of their next potential wife or affair.

To make others believe they are intelligent ?? lol.

Re: Why do basketball coaches wear suits?

Feb 1, 2018, 10:58 AM

Could be due to the nature of it being a 100% indoor sport, which would explain basketball and hockey coaches doing so.

Baseball and football are predominantly outdoors in either scorching hot or freezing cold conditions, so a suit wouldn't be as smart of attire.

That said, some b-ball coaches like Huggins at WVU do not don the suits, but the majority do because that's what the high profile coaches of the past did and it's a tradition that hasn't been challenged yet.

I did read once that NFL coaches are required to wear apparel that is able to be purchased in the team store, to apparently drive up sales. I'm not sure of the validity of this but it would make sense that most wear the most expensive polos/jackets in those stores lol out loud.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think they were wearing suits back when it was played

Re: I think they were wearing suits back when it was played

Yeah, back then they did, then a smarter guy decided it was dumb to wear that in an outdoor sport and bucked the tradition.

Makes sense to wear a suit. It’s a professional look.

They would look silly wearing a uniform like baseball coaches, and I don’t think the polo, khakis, and sneakers look of football coaches would look too good either.

Just the thought of some coaches sitting there in a basketball tank top would be funny. Like dopey Ole Roy with his glasses sitting there with shorty shorts, knee high socks and his Chuck Taylors. I'd pay good money to see coaches in uniform.

same kind his players wear - it was not a good look

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Always wondered that myself. Even at the high school

Feb 2, 2018, 10:32 AM

Level coaches usually wear suits. I'm glad they don't dress in uniforms like baseball but I don't see the need for a coat and tie. In tournaments early in the season the coaches are often seen dressing more casual.
