The New Math

Apr 16, 2018, 2:22 PM

This would do better if I had a chalk board but there is not one handy so I'll have to improvise.

The small country church had to make repairs to the roof and the cost exceeded their funds by &28.00. The Minister called seven of the members and asked them to attend an emergency meeting. After they had gathered and the minister had explained the situation, he said, "there are seven of you and if each one donates $13.00, that will take care of our debt". One of the members scratched his head and asked, "Preacher, are you sure that is correct"? The minister responded, "yes, and I'll show you the math". The Minister then wrote on the chalk board--

13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 13 He then added up all of the threes which totaled 21. He then counted the ones, totaling 7, thus 21 + 7 = 28

Another member of he congregation remarked. "Preacher, I know that equals 28 but it just don't sound right to me". "Well, let me multiply the numbers and we'll see how that comes out" said the Minister. So, the Minister goes to the board and wrote ........

7 X 13 = ??? Seven times three equals 21, Seven times one equals 7. So, that gives us 21 + 7 = 28.

Another one of the members was thoroughly confused and asked the Minister for one more calculation. he Minister said, "we've seen the answer by addition and multiplication, now let me show you the answer by division". The Minister went to the chalk board one more time and wrote....

28/7. "Now, everyone knows seven doesn't go into two but it goes into eight one time so now we got the first number. Now we got to subtract, or, as we sometimes call it "take away", from the 28 and that leaves us with 21. Seven goes into twenty one three times so that gives us 13".

One of the fellows rises and says, "fellows, I just don't understand this new math. I'm gonna give the Preacher my &13.00 and go home. I've got some plowing to do".

If you have heard about Common Core Math, this was exactly how it worked at the middle school level. This story is a good reminder to be thankful my child is now in HS where they still teach real math. :)
