The Hershel Walker pic next to his Trans Am
Nov 12, 2010, 2:39 PM

Speaking of paying players, does anyone have this pic? I saw it the other day on here. Thanks.
To be honest Clemson offered him money too but that's the way it was back in the 70s & 80s. Just watch the ESPN 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree.

for 3 hrs and would then go to the track for a run. Temp inside the garage went to 115. Lost 100lbs in 3 months and was in great shape.

story to go for elite RB in HS, top RB at OK to USFL and then nfl for 2 yrs
then he had to get trucking DL and then helped clean oil on shores of LA
that's an amazing ride and he really ended up with nothing.
a lot of people took advantage of him and that's the sad part.

since his parents were pressing for UGA - he told them UGA and THEY called Vince. Once Vince showed up at his door, he was too embarrassed to tell him 'no'. True story.

Hershel fund
Nov 12, 2010, 3:06 PM
[ in reply to I was told he wanted clemson, but uga put too much in ] |

I have family members that were approached by a well-known Clemson booster to contribute to the "hershel fund". They declined but the next time they saw the booster they asked how it went. They were told we lost him, UGA offered more.
Either UGA payed him more or this booster was angling to buy a new boat or something with his "donations".

it talks about how Hershel had to leave UGA after his jr year for NCAA rules violations that were going to come out...that's the reason he went to the USFL and not the NFL. The NFL wouldn't take underclassmen at the time.

& UGA NEVER cheated.....well at least until Jan Kemp turned them in. But still, UGA never went on serious probation. Shows how corrupt the NCAA was/is.

couple of other stories...
1. She was selling donuts for school fund raiser...HW bought all 20 boxes. 2. GA built a nice weight room on the back of his house...he gave my father in a law (a Clemson grad) a key to it and told him he could use it any at time.

I had 2 cousins at UGA during this time & they told me a lot

...of stuff back then. Yes, everybody knew about the black Trans Am. I can't remember now, but they even knew the car dealership. And Herschel was not the only player who "did business" there. In fact, they said black Trans Am's were a popular choice. Classic line one of my cousins said - "It looks like a Smokey & The Bandit convention over at the athletic dorm." LOL
Also, they said somebody used to come around and remind some of the players to move their cars from the jock dorm to regular student parking on the weekends of televised games. In case any of the media folks happened by... didn't want them to see too many new cars.
