Clemson’s offense certainly wasn’t bad last season, but offensive coordinator Tony Elliott sees plenty of room for improvement. Full Story »

Let's face it, it has been easy to score against our competition and that is a huge part of the problem when we play equal or better teams. In order to grow and get better, players need to play, not sit and watch 2nd and 3rd string guys try not to run up the score. I get that depth is important but get the 1st team to the point you want them and then work on the 2nd team and scrub team. Watch any good basketball team with a 8-10 man rotation and even in blowouts, scrubs don't play until the last minute or two.

having every player know they have a chance to play keeps them engaged in the season. That is how we beat Alabama in the championship game. They played their starters the whole game and they were exhausted at the end. Our guys were still fresh from heavy rotation and the back up and third string guys had a lot of game experience so we did not have a big drop in talent and they knew their assignments and did not make mistakes. I think it is good to play as much as you can. Our problem last two seasons are our o-line was not able to stack up against Ohio State or LSU and also our d-line could not get pressure and we had to rely to much on blitz and our secondary was exposed.

The offensive line woes last year were specifically due to a lack of balance both individually and as a group. All players need to get experience. Caldwell does a great job of cross training and getting the most out of players. Our veteran linemen were trying to do too much and would get caught over extending. That leads to one lineman reaching out or getting off balance or getting too far away from the next closest lineman and creating a gap which leads to the group getting beat. You can tell they work hard. You can also tell they need to rely more on their lower body and being in closer proximity to their intended target than improper use of reaching with their upper bodies. Elliot called this footwork. They should practice blocking with their chests and shoulders using footwork to keep proper balance. Practice "Bruce Lee" style short quick hands after proper balance is attained. Hands used to guide the target but also to realign oneself in conjunction with scheme and teammates only. Hands are not used to block. The body blocks. That was the fundamental missing last year.
