Aldi has announced a plan where a customer can place an order on line and the order can be picked up at the curb. Walmart, Kroger and several other grocery chains are using or plan to use a similar system.
Now, lets go back to the dark ages, the 1920's and 30's. Most grocery stores were indepemdent and in my old home town were five or six grocery stores. Very few people had a phone so each store had someone who went to the home of their regular customers each morning and took their order. The customer was informed of freash fruits, vegetables, meats, other special items and items on sale. The store employee returned to the store, the orders were filled and returned to the customer, all within a period of two to three hours.
Most accounts were charge accounts which the customer paid by the week or other agreed upon time frame.
Some stores had a "rolling store", a truck stocked with mostly basic items which covered the rural areas, usually on a weekly basis.
