Feb 3, 2019, 8:49 PM

This geezer doesn't listen to country and Christian music (unless I attend a church service).

Wrong...few things set us off like listening to lousy music!

Some of us old geezers like pop music........

Feb 3, 2019, 9:13 PM

Some like jazz. Some like country. Get the drift here? All of us added together far outnumber you dumb hip hop lovers. By your own chart, about 80% of this country does not care about hip hop. 80% of us think it stinks.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I enjoy many musical genres

Feb 3, 2019, 9:21 PM

If you think no one who listens to other genres of music also enjoys hip-hop, you're nuts.

I think you should have another look at that chart, and maybe see if you can interpret it properly this time.

Or do you think only 3.2% of the population cares about religious music?

Right?

That a small percentage of the population spends money on music..,,

Or did your statistics prof not teach you anything?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It means a lot more than your unsupported assertion

Feb 3, 2019, 9:29 PM

that 95% of the country doesn't care about/listen to rap.

If you can find me anything anywhere that proves THAT, I'll be mightily impressed.

20% of those are buying rap crap, then yes, only about 6% of the population is buying rap! So his figure of 95% not caring for rap, is not far off!

There are over 50 million paid subscribers to a streaming music service in the US. That's already ~15% of the population, and doesn't even include people who: 1) still buy CDs and records 2) buy digital songs and albums off iTunes and similar sites 3) attend live concerts and music festivals 4) freeload off friends or family who already have a paid account

https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/8474560/paid-music-streaming-subscribers-surpass-50-million-us-exclusive
Oh, and guess which genre of music is most popular on streaming services?

Feb 3, 2019, 10:22 PM

OK, so I looked again at that chart you posted, and the text was so poorly written that I had to know where it came from, so I found it.

https://infogram.com/sungyipwong
Infogram is a site where anyone can make their own charts and other infographics. This chart appears to have been created for an assignment in one of this woman's high school or college classes, based on the username and the time at which they were uploaded:

https://www.linkedin.com/in/sung-yip-wong-3b4085159
There's no clear indication where the data came from, but I suspect she polled her classmates for this.

My dad is 97. They lived with their grandmother. He said she was baffled by the modern music of the Ink Spots and Glen Miller he listened to on the radio. Of course he said he couldn't listen to my music because he couldn't take a bunch of screaming savages. He was referring to Bill Haley and the Drifters and Elvis.
It's always been like that. Halftime should be like one of those ETV fund raiser concerts if you ask me.

Re: Few things set the TNet geezers off quite like being made to

Feb 4, 2019, 12:09 AM

No one should use "rap" and "music" in the same sentence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you hear yourself?

Feb 4, 2019, 12:59 AM

Blues

"...no music has been subject to more controversy and more censorship than the blues. In its various guises through time, as boogie-woogie, as R&B, as British blues and as rock'n'roll, the blues has been accused of corrupting the young, encouraging sexual depravity and inciting murder."

"The controversial issues of sex and death, often themes in blues songs, added fuel to the fire of those who wished to ban the blues. Few artists faced as much bigotry and censorship as Billie Holiday. As well as being both female and black, Holiday's tough upbringing resulted in a dark songbook with distressing lyrics that white America wasn’t ready to hear."

"In the post-war early days of R&B, it wasn’t the lyrics that were causing the most offence, but the beat. A pulsating and repetitive sexual beat. Conservatives railed against the vulgarity of what one referred to as the 'animalistic obscenity of negro rock’n’rollers'. Other slurs referred to beats coming from the jungle and encouraging the self-expression of young people through sex."

Jazz

"Jazz's popularity grows, and as it attracts a wider audience, so do campaigns to censor this 'devil's music.' Early detractors like Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, ridicule jazz, saying it sounds better played backwards. A Cincinnati home for expectant mothers wins an injunction to prevent construction of a neighboring theater where jazz will be played, convincing a court that the music is dangerous to fetuses. By the end of the 1920s, at least 60 communities across the nation enact laws prohibiting jazz in public dance halls."

"Before jazz emerged, many music educators - worried that jazz would destroy young people's interest in classical music - tried to convince the public that European classical music was the only 'good music.' 'One day I was in a practice room supposedly practicing classical music, but I was playing some jazz and, I guess my professor heard me because he opened the door and looked in and said, "stop playing that trash,"' remembers jazz musician Marian McPartland."

Rock

"Rock and roll sent shockwaves across America. A generation of young teenagers collectively rebelled against the music their parents loved. In general, the older generation loathed rock and roll. Appalled by the new styles of dance the movement evoked, churches proclaimed it Satan's music.

Because rock and roll originated among the lower classes and a segregated ethnic group, many middle-class whites thought it was tasteless. Rock and roll records were banned from many radio stations and hundreds of schools."

"Rock and roll is the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression - lewd, sly, in plain fact, dirty - a rancid-smelling aphrodisiac and the martial music of every side-burned delinquent on the face of the earth."
– Frank Sinatra, 1957
