That guy was a favorite . Full Metal Jacket is a Top 10 all-time movie in my rankings , and it was because of his role .

He was untrained and raw , and just what that part needed .

At ease , Marine .

Made up much of his drill dialogue on the fly, way off ######, but based supposedly on either real DI performance or what DIs always wanted to say.

Ermey was an advisor on the film and originally his character was played by the guy who plays the Huey door gunner("If they run, they're VC. If they stand they're well-trained VC.") later in the film. Kubrick wasn't happy with the opening so he and Ermey had a few drinks and Ermey showed him what a real PI Di would sound like. Kubrick gave him a few things that he wanted in the scene and let Ermey completely wing it, and it took only two takes. The scene was supposed to take two minutes max, but Ermey was so wonderful, Kubrick just let him roll and left it all in. It is strange that Kubrick, a director who hated ad-libs, has four of the most famous ad-libs in history in his movies; Jack Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!", Malcolm McDowell's "Singin in the Rain" in the rape scene from "A Clockwork Orange", the French unit singing with the German girl in "Paths of Glory", and Ermey's speech.

Full Metal Jacket was like 2 movies. The first half is top 5, the second half sucked and sucked bad. The part RLee was in was awesome.

I wouldnt say the 2nd half sucked, it’s intensity and pace were just much different though.

God bless the fellow marine.
