Littlejohn Grill... on the "chitlin circuit" in 40s, 50s,60s

Cool article about a black blues club back in the day. Includes an interesting story involving Frank Howard and Ray Charles. Man, I'd give anything to have seen some of those acts back then, in a small venue, when they were young, and their shows were raw and spontaneous...

"The list of Grill celebrities is long and impressive. Many remember Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte, Piano Red, Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong and James Brown appearing on stage. These performers all went on to become big names in the entertainment world, but first polished their acts on the “chitlin' circuit” performing at segregated venues like the Grill."

Some of the white guys would be in the parking just hanging out to hear the music. I remember the building. I wasn't old enough when it was open. Heard about the good times there.

I'm thinking it became "Alfie's Playpen" right before it closed. A Lee Hall employee invited some of us to join him out there one night and we did, under his protection. This was the early 80's.
