That map is pointless. My issue is not an argument for or again re-opening; just a distaste for poor analysis. If you drew that same map for the entire world, since the U.S. has more than 1/4 of the world’s deaths, we’d be in red and the vast majority of the world woulda been green. What would the take away have been then? That only the U.S. shoulda shut down and the rest of the world overreacted? How bout if instead of 90K deaths in the the U.S. there were 9 million? The map would still look the same but I’m not sure anyone would be fighting for re-opening. It’s easy to force a chart or graph to tell what ever story you’re trying to tell.

Lots of Major Cities on here in the green areas that stack against the yellow and red. Some selectivity yes, but generally the take away is on the mark.

it would mean New York doesn't just suck relative to whole US, but New York sucks relative to the whole world. Way to go Cuomo.

Coomo should be charged with mass murder for forcing nursing and assisted living homes to accept infected folks back into their facilities...

Older voters tend conservative. Dem governors were employing the ultimate voter suppression, murdering them.

The whole country's had under 94,000. What don't you understand?

Dems are going to stop Monday-morning quarterbacking as soon as they realize that Gov Cuomo's "strong" leadership killed thousands of people.
Out of 96K deaths in the US so far, almost 50K were from within 100 miles of NYC.
Of the remaining 46K, almost 30K are from nursing homes.
Only 15-20K occurred among the interactive population. Less than 25% of a bad flu year.
It's not over, we can still get sick, and the shutdown prevented a terrible flu year. But now that we understand the danger and the methods to slow it, there's no reason for healthy people who are not caregivers to be shut down.
Unless we are being manipulated into Social Co-responsibility.

and mandated rules about wearing masks back in 1918 during the flu pandemic. Even 100 years ago when we understood very little about infectious disease, just plain old common sense compelled us to do what it takes to slow down the spread. And yes, of course, there were people rebelling against it back then. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Everything is not a conspiracy theory. The moon landing was not filmed in Des Moines, 9-11 was not an inside job, the school shootings are not faked, the earth is not flat, and JFK was not assassinated by (take your pick) the Cubans, LBJ, the Miami mob, the Russians, Elvis, the John Birch Society, Marilyn Monroe, Texas rednecks, whatever. Social distancing is not an evil commie plot. LOL

for the 10 millionth time... of course NYC was hit harder

than anywhere. It checks all the boxes for a pandemic. Incredible population density. High-rise apartments/condos and skyscraper office buildings...a gazillion people touching the same door handles and elevator buttons. Mass transit, people packed together on subways, buses, etc. International business and travel hub with tons of people flying in and out from all over the world. Of course it was hit harder than anywhere else.
And no politician can win, it's lose/lose in this situation. The mayor of San Francisco shutdown the city very early on and was blasted for overreacting. (Although she was praised in hindsight, of course). The NY folks waited a bit longer and were blasted for not doing enough, soon enough. Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.

For the 9 millionth time, I'm usually more critical of the Monday-morning quarterbacking, the 'since hindsight is 20-20 the President should have been governing with his a$$' crowd.
But we can make some distinct observations:
1) boy, The Atlantic sure is an entertaining leftist read. 2) Mayor Breed benefitted more from media coverage of China than Cuomo did from Italy 3) if a Chief Executive is going to go all despotic, it's better to do it proactively than reactively 4) her action to ban crowds of 1000+ precipitated the cancellation of all sporting events nationwide for months on end; Cuomo would not have done that. New Yorkers love their sports; San Franciscans only enjoy theirs. (I lived there, so I'm not making a light joke.) 5) her advisors learned lessons from the unwillingness to shut down bath houses during the AIDS epidemic; no evidence Cuomo got the same advice 6) the article mentions this: SF benefitted from Trump's travel ban from China. NYC suffered from Trump's delay in instituting one with Europe. 7) Mayor Breed was never overconfident about the potential health crisis; the NYC-based Caped Crusaders were. She made sure her city had resources available; Gov Cuomo was positive his state did, but was wrong. 8) Her office developed a plan for the most at-risk population. The NYC blues duet never did.
HOWEVER, 9) it is from the leftist Chief Executives on the West coast that we get this crazy notion that we can totally avoid this pandemic. This is not realistic. It is not possible to hibernate long enough for this pandemic winter to pass. The longer the West coast avoids social interaction, the more inevitable that the blight will have serious effects when it strikes. When will that be? 2021? 2022? We don't know, but it will.
So it is far too soon to give rose bouquets to Mayor Breed. San Francisco looks good as Round #1 closes, but we don't know how many rounds are in this fight.
