Downfield passing

Jul 21, 2018, 4:56 PM

Watching FSU game from last year and thinking about the Spring game. Kelly simply is not consistent with downfield passing. It’s been his weakness all along. We should have blown out FSU! It was tight because of Kelly’s inaccuracy and dropped passes (Cain). TL will end up replacing KB for this reason at some point.

Requires WR’s that can go up and get the ball, we didn’t

Have that last year until TH5 came on in The Citadel game, and then he got hurt in the 1st quarter of the BAMA game. Our starting WR’s last year were the weakest group we’ve had since 2009, and we didn’t have a true 9 receiver who could go up and get the ball. Our staring WR’s were 6’11/2” -198, 5’10”-180, and 5’10”-185, they were all good possession receivers but none of them had the ball skills of Williams, Nuke, Sammy, or M. Bryant. We should be much better this year with the emergence of TH5, and the talent of DK10 and J. Ross.

Speaking of last years FSU game you really think the reason we didn’t blow them out was KB5 passing? You don’t think it had anything to do with all the fumbles inside FSU’s 5 yard line?

For all of you who don’t think KB5 is a good QB, just put him on the LSU team and they’d be a national title contender.

Agree with the poster above, the only receiver we could count on in a 3rd down situation was Hunter Renfrow. KB knew that if he threw to anyone else it was 50/50 if it would be caught. Down field passing needs down field catching.

Why do you think Higgins hurt himself vs Bama? He was trying to make a miracle catch on a horribly thrown ball. But he had to try, since that was one of the only times KB even threw the ball into single coverage. Most of the times our receivers didn't have over-the-top safety coverage Kelly held the d**n ball!

Why do you think a receiver has to highpoint a ball? That's already a bad pass except in rare instances! Nuk and Sammy were no taller than last year's starters, but their QBs knew to hit them in the hands where they could catch and run. KB still can't hit a moving target.

You had to know we were in trouble vs Bama when we ran 2 plays for 5 yards, then tried to hit Renfrow on a 6 yard hitch route. With the LoS so crowded, Kelly had a small window for a completion. But he missed his spot by 2 feet. On a 6 yard pass. With his target standing still.

Granted, Bama's db went right through Hunter to break up the pass--clear PI that will never be called because the refs let Bama's DBs play ridiculously physical. But your QB must be capable of hitting small windows to beat Bama.

BTW, Deon was our only threat in that game. You can use him as KB's scapegoat all you want, but Deon was the only offensive player who seemed to understand what our offense needed to do to win. If he had held onto the early drop, he would have accounted for over 50% of our offense. So get a clue, wouldja?

You obviously don't recall the previous year in terms of how the OC's play calling was designed for taller receivers. Therefore MW and even JL took advantage of high-pointing the ball on multiple 3rd down or 20+yd passes.

Unfortunately throughout the year Deon dropped many of those opportunities even though he was in position and the ball was very catchable. If you are the QB, your faith begins to wane as the yr progresses with those types of passes. When as a QB your best opportunity to move the ball is short passes then that is what builds your confidence and your decision to throw deep become basically a "Hail Mary" therefore the accuracy decreases combined with multiple drops.

Tee is going to be better than Deon. We need one of our taller WR's to step up to be that type of receiver when need to draw attention in multiple directions.

1 fumble by KB.

It's hard for our receivers to look good when the ball in constantly thrown several feet above their head.

KB is a very good runner. He has good leadership skills. He doesn't make a lot of mental mistakes.

That said, only Paul Johnson recruits QB's to run the ball first. KB has difficulty completing passes downfield. Many that he did complete last year were done so because the WR bailed him out. There's a season worth of film on KB now and defenses will be stacking the box on us next year. We were fortunate our running game was so strong last year to put us in manageable situations all constantly.

151 yds...0 passing TDs. That's KB's REAL passing stats, like it or not. All scores by running.. please tell me how the passing was the strength. Take your orange glasses off and see the reality. That was a 3-6 crap team that needed a late FCS win to even be bowl eligible. If you really think that was anything close to what DW4 or TB10 faced, I feel sorry for you.

I cannot believe the number of people that are basing KB as a quarterback against Alabama. I don't understand why everyone is losing sleep over who is going to be QB. It's going to be whoever CDS puts out there. Have a beer, relax. This subject has been beat to death. Go watch the ACC Championship game. You'll feel better about KB.

LSU is light years from being a national title contender. KB would not even get them close to that.

Maybe if they got half of our team they might could win their division
