ACC is by far the top conference in median SAT score. Clemson would be 7th in Big10, 5th in Pac12, 4th in SEC (though Clemson as a school is ranked ahead of Auburn in U.S. News), and Clemson would be tied for 2nd in Big12
Here is a cut and paste from VT board:

Anecdotally, I know a recent SC high school grad who was admitted to Auburn as an out-of-state student with an 1185 SAT who was denied admission to Clemson as an in-state student. She enrolled at Auburn rather than doing The Bridge. Auburn's website states that the middle 50% of their incoming students scored SATs ranging from 1100-1320 (meaning that 25% of incoming Auburn students scored less than an 1100 and suggesting a median closer to 1210 than 1240). Other college data sites indicate a median Auburn SAT of 1175 (which is much more comparable with Alabama's median SAT and would explain how an out-of-state student gets in with an 1185).

For all the crap people give the Big 12, their scores really aren't THAT bad.
I'm not a big fan of the SAT anyway. I knew so many kids who made 1300+ on the SAT and then flunked out of Clemson. There's a lot more to be said for hard work than pure IQ.

Compared to SC, yes. Compared to the 9 ACC schools with higher scores it means we're below average.

That's a very insignificant advantage Clemson has over us considering we have over 10,000 more students. I assume this is for the entire student population. Clemson's scores are 3.5% higher and we have over 50% more students. There's no doubt in my mind that the avg SAT score of our top 17,000 students would far surpass Clemson's avg. for the same number of students.

First of all, USC-Columbia does not have more than 10k more UNDERGRADUATE students than Clemson. USC-Columbia has a little more than 21k undergrads while Clemson has a little more than 15k undergrads - a difference of 6k not more than 10k. But, here's the real fault in your analysis - Clemson receives more than 10k applications from out-of-state students each year and only accepts about 10% with a median SAT near 1400. IF Clemson WANTED to be the size of USC-Columbia (which is does NOT), it could simply accept 2.5 times as many out-of-state applicants which would substantially RAISE its median SAT while bringing in more than $30M in new out-of-state tuition annually at $20k a head. Even if Clemson enrolled an additional 750 out-of-state students along with an additional 750 in-state students each year, the median SAT would still rise though by not nearly as much. In 4 years, Clemson would have the same size undergraduate enrollment as USC-Columbia and the SAT advantage for Clemson would be even greater than it is now.
USC's problem is just the opposite. To fill its classrooms, it is enrolling 800 or so freshman each year with no business at a four-year college much less one purporting to be the "flagship" institution of public higher education in this state.
At a dinner party a couple of weeks ago, I complimented President Pastides on how much more competitive USC has become for the best and brightest in-state students in the last several years ago and told him that during the Palms and Sorensen days, Clemson AND College of Charleston took a higher share of the best and brightest from USC than they do now. I had to get what I thought was a little dig though when I suggested that USC could dramatically improve the academic reputation of its Columbia campus if it simply diverted the lowest 20% of each incoming class to Aiken and Spartanburg. He shot me a look of recognition and said almost in a whisper, "that would be nice."
The bottom line is that USC is run not by Pastides but by the state legislature and those dumba$$es are going to make sure that their brain-dead children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, godchildren, et al, are going to have a spot on the Columbia campus with their 95 IQs and 950 SATs and all. THAT along with the fact that Columbia campus is in the middle of a crime-riddled hellhole is why USC will NEVER close the gap with Clemson.

about them competing for students. In the last two years, I have watched family members graduate from Porter Gaud and Academic Magnet - by any measure two of the top high schools in the state. Last year at Porter Gaud, more than a dozen of the 80-90 graduates were going to Clemson and exactly 1 was going to USC. This year at AM, more than 25 of the 150 grads (including the valedictorian and salutatorian) are going to Clemson, no more than 2 or 3 are going to USC. In the Lowcountry, anyway, we are beating their brains in.

legislature or something?
My numbers were for 2011and were from the respective universities. To refute me, you provide me a link to "E-How Mom" that provides some numbers from 2009?!? IF you had taken the time or had the ability to read your link for comprehension, you would have seen that back in 2009, Clemson had just over 14k undergrads (it is now just over 15k) and that USC had over 28k undergrad AND GRADUATE students back in '09 (it is now almost 30k of which almost 22k are UNDERGRADS). The reason GRAD students don't count is that their stale SAT scores from 5-25 years ago are not included in these averages. Those more than 8k USC GRADUATE and professional students (a disproportionate number of which are Clemson graduates by the way) are admitted on the basis of their GRE, GMAT, MCAT and LSAT scores - not their SAT scores.
Are you really this dense? Is your uncle really in the legislature?

Although above states that we have 15,836 undergraduate students and 4,078 graduate students, for a total of 19,914.
http://ipr.sc.edu/factbook/2012/columbia/flenrtd.htm
According to the above, South Carolina has 22,556 undergraduate students and 6,693 graduate students. Excluding the 1,472 professional students (medical, law and pharmacy), that's 29,249 students total.
South Carolina has 6,720 more undergraduate students than Clemson and 9,335 more total students than Clemson.
