ACC is by far the top conference in median SAT score. Clemson would be 7th in Big10, 5th in Pac12, 4th in SEC (though Clemson as a school is ranked ahead of Auburn in U.S. News), and Clemson would be tied for 2nd in Big12

First of all, USC-Columbia does not have more than 10k more UNDERGRADUATE students than Clemson. USC-Columbia has a little more than 21k undergrads while Clemson has a little more than 15k undergrads - a difference of 6k not more than 10k. But, here's the real fault in your analysis - Clemson receives more than 10k applications from out-of-state students each year and only accepts about 10% with a median SAT near 1400. IF Clemson WANTED to be the size of USC-Columbia (which is does NOT), it could simply accept 2.5 times as many out-of-state applicants which would substantially RAISE its median SAT while bringing in more than $30M in new out-of-state tuition annually at $20k a head. Even if Clemson enrolled an additional 750 out-of-state students along with an additional 750 in-state students each year, the median SAT would still rise though by not nearly as much. In 4 years, Clemson would have the same size undergraduate enrollment as USC-Columbia and the SAT advantage for Clemson would be even greater than it is now.

USC's problem is just the opposite. To fill its classrooms, it is enrolling 800 or so freshman each year with no business at a four-year college much less one purporting to be the "flagship" institution of public higher education in this state.

At a dinner party a couple of weeks ago, I complimented President Pastides on how much more competitive USC has become for the best and brightest in-state students in the last several years ago and told him that during the Palms and Sorensen days, Clemson AND College of Charleston took a higher share of the best and brightest from USC than they do now. I had to get what I thought was a little dig though when I suggested that USC could dramatically improve the academic reputation of its Columbia campus if it simply diverted the lowest 20% of each incoming class to Aiken and Spartanburg. He shot me a look of recognition and said almost in a whisper, "that would be nice."

The bottom line is that USC is run not by Pastides but by the state legislature and those dumba$$es are going to make sure that their brain-dead children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, godchildren, et al, are going to have a spot on the Columbia campus with their 95 IQs and 950 SATs and all. THAT along with the fact that Columbia campus is in the middle of a crime-riddled hellhole is why USC will NEVER close the gap with Clemson.
