A&M have the worst wizard robes - stolen from FSU

Sep 5, 2019, 9:34 AM

Look at this thing, it is like they never really bothered. They just stole (get it) FSU's hand-me-downs. I mean, what is the point of becoming a wizard if you can't look like a baller....

They have nothing on Clemson's Purple pimp suit...(see left).

on the sleeves of all of them is? All these type robes seem to have them.

The type of sleeves (and amount of material) denote rank/status. the other parts of the gown denote other items such as school, degree, etc. Thus the "rank" of the degree obtained is indicated by the sleeves. Short "open" is baccalaureate, close/long sleeves is the masters level, and then billowed "puffy" is doctoral but that often has three stripes although some places might not - kinda depends. Still, Clemson will provide trustees the doctoral gown without the bars for those without doctoral degrees (gets a palmetto tree) and of course the president rocks four bars. Then you might have any of the four traditional schools (law, medicine, divinity, and philosophy) with slightly different quirks.

It really isn't sergeant stripes as the bars are not really chevrons... and I think that started being worn near the cuff.... But that is my pedantic side, I would say it would be more akin to epaulettes or similar. Still, the bars are not worn by bachelors/master level gowns.

Correction, not epaulettes, but something similar that I am blanking on... that was likely used in connection to the hood. Anyway, it may link to something of a hold over from a catholic dress but I just can't think of it, uggg.

at my grad, our key note speaker (not a CU grad) wore his zodiac sign medallion with his robe. It was the size of a lunch plate. Must have been aluminum to keep from tipping over.
