Basically same players, minus Blossomgame and now Grantham. Puzzling that we weren’t better last year. Playing at home?

came out of that experience, including witnessing a horrendous terrorist attack just outside their hotel, greatly help bring this team together. Really made for a team that appreciates each other and what's important in life.

A lot of times it's how much you are willing to do, to get to where you want to be. How hard and how much work they put in as a team in Off season work outs, mostly has everything to with how a team plays the following season. I think that is the case with this team!!!

This team individually respects the talents and contributions of each member, whether in practice or in games, and having seen what it takes to finish, something not done last season, the older players are much more aware of their leadership roles.
I think this group has the potential to be a great team despite the loss of Grantham to injury. Just take matters one game at a time and have everybody contribute.
Go Tigers!

break here or there. Last year, many, many close games. But couldn't get the break. A little luck, a little preparation and the breaks happen. That gets you over the hump. Then, nothing compares with confidence. It starts there and then next thing you know . .you're a good team. We are far from great, but we are a good team that knows how to win . . most times.

And he sort of wilted under the weight of expectations.
As good as Jaron was as a junior, as our senior go-to guy last year he just wasn't able to produce.
Meanwhile, this year the talent BB brought in through transfer has matured and come together as a unit with 4-5 guys consistently getting the job done and no player having to dominate game in and game out.

this is a 'connected' team
the trip to Spain also helped draw them together
Reed and Mitchell have a year of ACC experience behind them
DeVoe is playing with a lot of confidence
balanced scoring makes this team hard to defend

Another year of experience for some of our transfers

has made a big difference. We rely heavily on DeVoe and Mitchell, and they are both excellent players. Thomas has matured a lot as well. This, plus DeVoe's improvement, has been the difference this year in our success.
However, I still contend that last year's team was good. We lost SO many close games, and while part of that is due to players not making enough plays, a lot of it comes down to the other team just making a big play or the ball bouncing the wrong way. If just two or three of the many close losses we had last year were instead wins, we would've been an NCAA Tournament team rather than an NIT team. While it ultimately comes down to wins and losses, I don't think Brad and the team deserved nearly as much criticism for last year as they received.
Thankfully, this year we are doing all of the little things necessary to win the close games. We are having an incredible year, and it is shaping up to be one of our best ever.

Last year, the surest indicator that we were about to lose
Feb 3, 2018, 6:01 PM
|
|
was being 3 pts ahead with 15 seconds left in the game and having the ball out of bounds. I could almost always predict where the inbounds pass was going to go and so could our opponents. It was an almost automatic turnover.
Late game strategy has been much better this year. Maybe the coaching call was the same last year but they couldn't execute it. This year's team can.
I could go on or I could just admit that I'm really not sure what has caused the difference.

Having three 80%+ FT shooters helps immensely as well

The other team doesn't know who to guard on the in-bounds plays and they also don't know who to foul.
It's so comforting to know that the in-bounds pass can go to Reed, Mitchell, or Devoe and still be pretty much a sure thing at the FT line when they get fouled.
This is pretty much an unprecedented situation for Clemson.

It’s was the first year of ACC basketball for all of our transfers last year. They gained experience last year.
Also, we have a lot more depth with our big men. Donell has been a solid back up and we also have skara, Simms, and Malik William. We basically only had djitte and Thomas last year. Grantham was also terrible last year. He lost all confidence in his shooting.

First and foremost it begins with the defense

our defensive metrics are light years better than last year. We play team defense, and Thomas has emerged as a true rim protector. Last year, more than anything else, it was defensive breakdowns that cost us games.
Offensively we are better than last year, but not like we are defensively. And I don't think you can discount the real chemistry this group has

BB asked Dabo for advice, who told him to emphasize team as

family. Also, Dabo said have to use tough love and then be completely in during the game. Afterwards, BB helped them bond on trip to Spain starting using all the Dabo principles, so when they returned from trip, they felt inspired to practice hard to reach goals.

Because they're basically the same players as last year. This year they know each other's strengths such as who shoots well from certain spots on the court.
