It doesn't actually matter who it is

Since he paid it back within a reasonable period, it shouldn't be a violation.

Why shouldn't it? I'm sure this "loan" didn't act like a traditional loan. Was there interest accruing, was there documentation or a payment plan? If it was just a here's 5k and pay it back when you can handshake type of deal....that's a violation. Doesn't matter if he paid it back. Taking out a personal loan from a bank is a totally different story.

That's why the details here are very important***

I agree the details are very important. Just because chase says it was a loan from a family friend and he paid it back does not absolve him of a violation. With that being said, though, any way you slice this it doesn't look good through ncaa eyes.

Re: It doesn't actually matter who it is

You are not legally required to charge interest when lending a friend money. If the terms were oral, then that is legally binding and documentation is not necessary.

if you accept money for oral, isn't that

Looking through the ncaa prism, it's not about what's legal it's about if it violates their rules.

If you don’t charge a reasonable market rate of interest

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 11:22 AM

The IRS considers it a gift and not a loan. That’s why it’s important to have documentation.

Family Friend he met the Summer BEFORE

going to OSU is the Red Flag. Never saw anything about a loan till he got caught.

I agree. If there's any kind of documentation that he paid

the loan back within a matter of months, i don't see why that should be a violation.

Don't give a rat's ### about Ohio State and would rather them lose every game. But I am generally a proponent for the student-athlete and don't like to see great players like Chase unfairly punished for antiquated and monopolized NCAA laws.

I am likewise a proponent for the student-athlete but this reeks of impermissible benefits.

If Ohio State didn't think so as well, they wouldn't have suspended him.

If Chase is not telling the truth, then this is absolutely a violation and should lead to forfeiture of wins. Until further information comes forward, I'm slow to condemn a 20-year-old kid.

just spitballing(guessing),judging by the "time" that this friend became a friend, odds are ..........???

If it were a "loan" and not a loan i seriously doubt he

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 10:40 AM

would've paid it back prior to getting his NFL contract, if at all. If he did, in fact, pay it back quickly then i don't believe it should matter who the money came from. That makes it a legitimate loan in my opinion and not something he should be suspended over.

I'm reserving judgement until some more details come forward.

It was a gift, not a loan (apparently), at a time

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 11:35 AM

when I guess he needed the money. Doesn’t matter if it’s gifted back lol. Just like if you steal a bunch of stuff and then later return it, they are still likely going to charge you. Maybe his financial situation improved or maybe he just got worried about getting caught. Either way the timing is very suspicious. I’m certainly not going to rely on a Tweet from the guy as proof. I do agree though that all the facts need to come out.

loan from a family friend...

that you met right after you signed a NLI to play at Ohio State?

Yea...there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING suspicious and fishy about that.

But my family has friends that I've only known for a few weeks. One is my grandparent's lifetime friend who lives out of state and I only met a couple weeks ago. Would they not be considered a family-friend?

They are certainly friends of you grandparents...

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 11:12 AM

but not necessarily friends of yours and on that basis, I doubt they would be willing to loan you any significant amount of money.

That he’s known for 2 1/2 years. I’m sorry but that’s a lie if I’ve ever heard one. I know there aren’t any rules for someone to become a family friend but 2 1/2 years plus the person you had met probably after you had committed isn’t a friend. That would be a osu booster buddy. If his tweet is true he should not be eligible. He can be like everyone else and go get a loan through the bank but he didn’t.

That’s not a good look at all. Sorry OSU, you just got your first L of the season and now it’s over for them. Young is off to the NFL most likely

Yep, OSU has played an illegal player the entire season and I'm guessing they move from 8-0 to 0-8.

military_donation.jpg

I don't believe that's how it works

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 10:41 AM

If they just found out this week that he's been ineligible and they do not play him in a game until he is cleared by the NCAA, i don't think they have to vacate anything.

In my world, a “family friend” is someone I’ve known more than 3 years. Maybe it’s just me?

OSU is like family. haven't you heard. It's a booster that is like a part of his family. He'll be OK. the NCAA will understand.

Oh and if he needed the loan so bad then how did he already pay it back since he’s a college athlete and doesn’t make money?

military_donation.jpg

This is exactly the kind of thing the NCAA needs to crack

[1]

down on. Looks like he took some money and, when he got caught, called it a loan. The NCAA can't allow that kind of fake "workaround."

badge-donor-05yr.jpg

Where did he get the money...........

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 11:04 AM

Where did he get the money from to pay the "loan" back, he doesn't work?

Who knows, but he does get a stipend from the University

Posted: Nov 8, 2019 11:07 AM

every year. Probably in the range of $2,800 - $3,500 per year.

As several people have mentioned, his statement that the person who gave him didn't become a family friend until he was already headed to OSU is what makes this seem really questionable.

If this was some family friend from middle school or parents old friend or something then this would have likely already been resolved.

I have a buddy who had one of these "family friend's" issued to him from the school where he played baseball.

He said there was an understanding that the players who came from struggling families would be introduced to a "friend" to take care of them during their time in school.
