Since he paid it back within a reasonable period, it shouldn't be a violation.

Why shouldn't it? I'm sure this "loan" didn't act like a traditional loan. Was there interest accruing, was there documentation or a payment plan? If it was just a here's 5k and pay it back when you can handshake type of deal....that's a violation. Doesn't matter if he paid it back. Taking out a personal loan from a bank is a totally different story.

I agree the details are very important. Just because chase says it was a loan from a family friend and he paid it back does not absolve him of a violation. With that being said, though, any way you slice this it doesn't look good through ncaa eyes.

You are not legally required to charge interest when lending a friend money. If the terms were oral, then that is legally binding and documentation is not necessary.

Looking through the ncaa prism, it's not about what's legal it's about if it violates their rules.

Don't give a rat's ### about Ohio State and would rather them lose every game. But I am generally a proponent for the student-athlete and don't like to see great players like Chase unfairly punished for antiquated and monopolized NCAA laws.

I am likewise a proponent for the student-athlete but this reeks of impermissible benefits.
If Ohio State didn't think so as well, they wouldn't have suspended him.

If Chase is not telling the truth, then this is absolutely a violation and should lead to forfeiture of wins. Until further information comes forward, I'm slow to condemn a 20-year-old kid.

would've paid it back prior to getting his NFL contract, if at all. If he did, in fact, pay it back quickly then i don't believe it should matter who the money came from. That makes it a legitimate loan in my opinion and not something he should be suspended over.
I'm reserving judgement until some more details come forward.

That he’s known for 2 1/2 years. I’m sorry but that’s a lie if I’ve ever heard one. I know there aren’t any rules for someone to become a family friend but 2 1/2 years plus the person you had met probably after you had committed isn’t a friend. That would be a osu booster buddy. If his tweet is true he should not be eligible. He can be like everyone else and go get a loan through the bank but he didn’t.

Yep, OSU has played an illegal player the entire season and I'm guessing they move from 8-0 to 0-8.

If they just found out this week that he's been ineligible and they do not play him in a game until he is cleared by the NCAA, i don't think they have to vacate anything.

As several people have mentioned, his statement that the person who gave him didn't become a family friend until he was already headed to OSU is what makes this seem really questionable.
If this was some family friend from middle school or parents old friend or something then this would have likely already been resolved.
I have a buddy who had one of these "family friend's" issued to him from the school where he played baseball.
He said there was an understanding that the players who came from struggling families would be introduced to a "friend" to take care of them during their time in school.
