Clemson soccer fans had to watch not one but two International-caliber players get hacked down by injury, Stuart Holden and Oguchi Onyewu. Holden was hacked down first by Belgian lawnmower Nigel de Jong - one of the dirtiest players in soccer, he of the "kung-fu kick" fame back in the World Cup, and then by Manchester United's Johnny Evans, both inexcuseable dirty fouls that ultimately ended Holden's career.
Oguchi Onyewu's fall was a little less dramatic but maybe even harder. He ruptured his Achilles in 2009, saving Team USA's bacon against Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying - which ultimately put us first in North American qualifying and got us a favorable group in South Africa 2010, recovered, and went on to play for Italian superpower AC Milan, before another series of injuries (and another Achilles injury) ultimately put him down, apparently for the count, two years ago. Unwanted by European teams, Gooch rehabbed again...and finally made it back with the Philadelphia Union after an unpaid trial convinced the Union Gooch still had something left in his legs.
Really cool story: yesterday was Gooch's 35th birthday - and he scored for the Union at RFK against DC United. Never in a million years thought Gooch would make it back at his age with the massive injuries he had...but he did. Sometimes the good guys win.
