My one schedule complaint is Akron

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 11:28 AM

Could we not find someone other than Akron? I know we have the ND game, but I think we could have done a little better than Akron.

You prefer Troy or Charlotte?***

yes, Char. and Troy more in line with Coots

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 11:54 AM

Charlotte #74, Coots #86, Troy #94, Akron #130 (0-12)

I would prefer like a GA South, Utah St, Tulane, Marshall, C. Michigan, etc.. They arent great but are good midrange opponents that traditionally qualify for bowls.

You really want to play a cut blocking offense like GSU? Why risk the injuries for no real upside?

that was just an example of the quality of team

not necessarily one Im pushing for

#### no. Keep it as easy as possible. I swear I’m the only one who loves the SEC complainers as they all beat each other up and we’re well rested for the playoffs.

BTW what the crap is a Zip anyway?

Go back to April 2015 and let the Athletic Department know that Akron would be this bad 5 years later.

unless our AD is inept, im sure there was some flexibility

with the contract as to escape clauses. There is no way a competent AD would get locked down with a game like Akron and not have a way out.

Or, you don't stress out about it because it simply doesn't matter. IF, and that's a big IF, a spot in the playoff came down to strength of schedule the committee isn't going to say "Well if they had played Central Michigan instead of Akron they'd be in, but they didn't so they're out."

I also do not follow Akron football very much, but I doubt they have another 0-12 year this year (which is what the metrics actually will follow, not last year's results).

As for getting out of it, yeah, let's just throw away money so that we can play a "better" G5 team. Makes zero sense.

2020 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

The "out" would probably cost us a lot of money

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 12:12 PM

and trying to schedule a replacement this late in the game would be difficult as well. We might ditch Akron only to get Liberty or something like that.

We play S.C. state dome years. Akron is an NFL team compared to them.

easily predicted that Akron wouldn't be worth a flip. This isn't like 2019 aTm electing to suck eggs.

That's true, and a very good point. I just don't understand how people don't realize that we are locking teams down to play several years in advance.

I can't wait for 2035 when Oklahoma sucks and get trashed for playing them.

2020 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

We locked that game in in 2015. How are we supposed to know they’ll go 0-12

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 12:18 PM

in 2019?

They went to a bowl game the year we put them on the schedule. They went to a bowl game three years ago. Then they had a bad season, then an awful season.

It doesn’t matter. Any team we schedule that isn’t Power 5 will be cannon fodder.

Troy actually put up a fight the last time we played them.***

In my opinion, there isn't a major college team in the country who plays more than 10 competitive regular season games per year.

It doesn't matter to me one bit what the name on the jersey is for the two down games that we play.

It's an extra recovery week for our starters most of the time, and is a great way to pile up the snap count for younger guys and backups.

These games would have gone away long ago if college coaches weren't adamant about keeping these types of games around.

1. I find their Name hilarious - The Akron Zips
2. They went 0-14 last year living up to their moniker.
3. I find it a bad look for CU to schedule a game with a team that went 0-14 last year when all we heard from every region of the country was the whining about our schedule. This gives the clowns added fuel for their arguments.

1. Point stands, but they were 0-12. If you're gonna #### on 'em, at least let it be factual ########.

2. It's crazy that we cannot predict the future. I mean in April 2015 when we scheduled this game we should've known that they would be 0-12 the season before we played them. It's really getting ridiculous.

Thanks for the heads up about my inaccurate elimination... will tighten it up. Maybe some kegals…..
To your second point.....WE NEED A BETTER CRYSTAL BALL! I've been saying this for years to any halfling that would listen...until they started making me take the medication....for the voices...which are not sooo bad IMHO :)

I thought the oculus was supposed to fix this for us?***

They had a good coach when we scheduled them.

im sure we could have gotten out of the contract

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 11:58 AM

and found someone else when it was apparent for at least 3 years they were heading down hill. There is no way our athletic department would have us really boxed in with no flexibility for a game against Akron

Re: im sure we could have gotten out of the contract

Yeah, because other schools aren't locked up into these contracts, right?

Sit back, enjoy the win.

you have to play somebody.

contracts with the smaller schools arent written in stone

and probably have lots of ways to get out of them to allow for flexibility.

the only thing you could ask is if another team was

available on short notice

No there weren’t.

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 12:39 PM

Next question.

Maybe so..but not without a big cost and headaches..

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 3:50 PM

we agreed to pay them 1.1 million to come play at Death Valley. We'd probably have to find them another place to play and make up any financial difference. Plus, we'd then have to find a team to play on short notice that wants to come to Clemson (bc we cannot lose that home game for revenues sake)for a one year deal. Also, you cant bank on a team being good when you schedule them...you just never know.

Prefer to play a southern state opponent like ULM, La Tech, UAB, Tulane, Southern Miss- Akron Yuck!

I don't know, beating Ohio teams in football is pretty fun.

Looked and saw App State, Florida Atlantic. La Tech and Troy on near future schedules for that mid major opponent. At least little better.

thats the point though

Posted: Jan 22, 2020 12:46 PM

Everybody plays a group of 5 game every year. And how good those teams are fluctuates rapidly. Like how do we know La Tech don’t fall off a cliff before we play them in a few years?

No one could have known that the ACC would be bad enough that ESPN would make it their mission in life to downgrade them when this schedule was made. We deserve a tasty cupcake just as much as anyone else.
